114 Hot Shot

Re: 114 Hot Shot

Ian The best tubocharged engines installations always design with an inter cooler. The compressor driven by the turbine requires quite a bit of power (over 20HP) to compress the air at ait (atmospheric Pressure at 18,000 ft is 1/2 SL) to manifold pr of 30 in.

This work done in compression comes with losses so heats the air while compressing it. The compressor discharge air is above 200F. The effect of outside air temp even though it may be below freezing thus is marginal in the teens perhaps even in Canada or Alaska.

As you state an intercooler helps in allowing more mass flow due to cooler charge density beyond that the cooler charge air provides detonation margin.

If you like I can throw in a post with typical 260 HP turbo supercharger work done and estimated charge temp numbers.

Kinda cool - the things that show up in your mailbox, from time to time!

Re: 114 Hot Shot

Now you are all official Carl. Hope you got a nice frame to put it in.

Great work!

Re: 114 Hot Shot

Wow Carl fantastic achievement getting an STC is a major work effort.

HI everybody!
I Will have soon to proceed to overhaul to my io540t4b5d of my Commander 114 1978. Some mechanic recommended me to do a Tork and Polish cylinder, stage 1 to gain some HP. I plan to install GAMI injectors also. The other option, more costly, would be to go with turbonormalising, but would be very more expansive. Does somebody have experience with these kind of mods like tork and polish and what could I expect of gain in power?
Thank you very much for your help!
Mat

Re: 114 Hot Shot

Carl, Does this mod require a re-work of the older (114 / 114A) cowling setups? (Does it use the same intake scoop and filter?) If so, are these cowling mod’s included in the upgrade price?

Hi
Will do my overhaul this fall on my 114. Does anybody has installed the new turbonormalizer kit on his 114 and what about real performances?
Thanks!

There are some cowl modifications required. Yes they will be included in the price. I will have more info for you very soon.

Thanks,

Kind of late responding to this, but there is one @kgyr owned by Greg Torres. I know he has had 3 or 4 emergencies over the years due to exhaust failures, but he is reluctant to discuss it.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your excellent feedback.

If 6 are overseas, and one is not being flown, that accounts for all of them.

I hadn't heard of the in flight fire incident. Another good reason for redesigning the exhaust. I'm sure after hearing about Pete's adventure most of us are pretty certain that we don't want an in flight fire.

The benefits of an intercooler are indisputable. It would weigh less than a gallon of gas, and would probably save you a gallon of gas on initial climb alone, so if you don't want to add any extra weight you could simply put 1 less gallon of fuel in your plane every time you fill it:-)

I'll email you directly.

Thanks,

Re: 114 Hot Shot

As I've stated before. I have over 1,000 hours in mine since I bought it with no issues, exhaust or otherwise.

Ian

I am not trying to knock yours, just noticed that earlier in the post that Carl was trying to figure out where the current TC's were, and there was no mention of Greg's. I know yours has been reliable but my understanding is that Camarillo stopped selling them because of the exhaust issues. I am sure Carl will address those issues, and the newer version will be more reliable.

Camarillo didn't stop just because of the exhaust system. They had other reasons that were not related to any problems with the system. They had solutions to the exhaust system on the table, but weren't pursuing them because they had decided not to continue with the program.

Re: 114 Hot Shot

I know the 114B (IO-540-T4B5) is not covered by the 114 hotshot (yet), but when it is, will it cover the 114/114As that have the IO-540-T4B5 via Aerodyme's Slick STC?
