The "8 Knot Mod"

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

You're correct Scott, My Bad. As for me, At 10K, 65% usally gets me about 138. I'm hoping after this annual for an even 140. At 75% I get 145KTAS at about 14GPH. 65% is what I always cruise around at.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi All,

Nobody flying? come on... more pictures :-)

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Roberto,

Thanks for the pics, what were the numbers?

Altitude, temp, indicated and true airspeeds...

Your trim wheel position seems a bit aft for being "on the step".
Have you checked it on the ground to see if streamlined elevator
and trim tabs put your indicator near the neutral mark?

Jim

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Good day,
Here are my pics from flight home from FLA with my new IFR! I forgot to take pic of trim, but was just a little pas neut. Was at 6.9 138 indicated and 131 GS. The rest you can see from pics. Thanks!

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Elliot,

Looks like you may have out-done your last panel...

Very nice :)

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

ahhhhh ... a proud member of the "very light panel" club. So clean-looking. Love it.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Yeah, I noticed the glare too. My office lit up with that picture.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Elliot ... there are many COGers who would have you believe that your light panel, besides blinding you, of course, will cause skin cancer, retinopathy and macular degeneration, not to mention hair loss and impotence. It's great always having a good tan, though, isn't it? I also like being able to use mine as a white board with dry-erase markers for jotting down clearences, weather, ATIS info and doctors phone numbers.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Elliot,

Nice panel!

138 at 6900 in a 114TC? What was the OAT? Did you have the motor turned on?
The tail offset is significant. That's a lot of drag. Thanks for the pic.

Jim

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hey everyone please include the data form sheet we had made up before with your pictures so Jim R can get good detailed info to do a engineering analyses for comparative evaluation.

Here's the data form sheet again (enclosed) in case some missed it. I will help Jim R with the analyses - it will be great to know how the Commanders behave across so many data points rather than just 1 or 2 airplanes. We should be able to get's lots of good data and help make efficiency recommendations.

Checking the instruments in the photos, I see:

-3c OAT
30.28" baro
6900' MSL

That gives approximately 151 KTAS, and looks like a 20kt headwind.

2100 rpm
28" MP
14.6 gpm

The RPM seems low for just 6900'. Is it recommended that a 114TC operate that slow on the prop with such a boosted MP? I can't quite make out the green arc on the tach, but it seems like it stops at 2200 rpm.

AHA! The GEM display is missing cylinder #5. That explains everything. :)

Scott, I hate to disappoint you but I'm pretty sure the light coloring is just because of the flash on the camera. If you look at the edges of the pictures I think you'll see the panel is gray. A light gray, but gray nonetheless, and certainly not refrigerator white.

:D

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

yes.. I hate a hellatious head wind. At times was over 70 knots. I was also running real low on MP and RPM to save some gas. I Do thik I have a rigging issue tho.My tack is about 100 off. so I adjust. Its 2200 rpm. Is very smoth in that spot w 28" MP. For some reason one EGT did not come out in the picture, very odd. It was working tho. The light panel is good for me. I loved it in 23W and this one came like that. It is a light greyish

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

I will get my 76 112 TC Sr. No. 13042, "rigged in 06", Cen III for alt hold & heading, up and pics taken around Mar 7th. Pilot 215. Bag area MT, Fuel 48, 3 blade, other numbers from the flight to be posted then or e-mailed.

Do you have a preferred spacing between the numbers for measuring the movement of the Trim Wheel ??

Good luck on the STC.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Bob,

Before the flight, position your trim wheel to make the trim tabs streamlined with the elevators (average of left and right) and mark this position of your trim wheel. Then, report to me the in flight trimmed condition as follows:

-3 -2 -1 N +1 +2 +3

-3 equals max nose down trim
N equals the neutral position you marked
+3 equals max nose up trim

Sid's form is helpful.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Jim,
K.
I have the initial data needs from you first posting.
This additional will be added.
I downloaded Sid's excel.
Will try to fill it in.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

I was looking for the photo of the panel, but couldn't find it. we had about 40 gallons on board and just me and my son sitting up front, so that give us about around 300 pounds there.

Temperature was around 20 C, indicated airspeed just short of 130 Kts, 24"MP, 2400 RPM
