The "8 Knot Mod"

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

That's great news. Can't wait for your final approval. Planning the trip to BTV already.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi All,

For those of you following this thread, please check the following new thread:

SuperStream

I am trying to contact everyone who had posted here to make sure you are aware the STC has engineering approval and is now imminent and I am offering some very special early-bird prices for the kit and/or turn-key modification. Specials end this Friday, Oct 1.

Info you requested is in page one of the thread you posted in (here). There is also lots of info on Props if you use the search function (been discussed many times).

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Jim,

Aerodymes tail mod and your rigging has brought new joy to flying my 114B. Flew animal rescue yesterday from PKB-BNL-PKB. I am still getting TAS of 156 to 158 with 1900 hour IO540. Hope you and Martine are doing well in beautiful Vermont.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Jim, I fairly happy with my speed but won't mind a new set of eyes to check / verify my setup. What is the 'average' down time for the mod?

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Jim,

I am really wondering if you change the incidence of the horizontal tail, will it not change the stability of the plane in adverse direction? I am aware that the stabilizer produces downdraft and hence drag, but this is done for a reason.

Is your mod working because the original downdraft is simply overdone and the plane can tolerate less without becoming unstable? What happens in FL250, is it still OK?

Are you turbocharged? If not, you will be going so dog slow at that altitude it won't make any difference anyway. The "8 Knot Mod" on naturally aspirated Commanders is only going to be helpful within a certain altitude range. Once you are above that range the horsepower loss will counter any benefit. When the mod was originally put into practice, back in the 90's by Robin MIley, it was done on a turbonormalized Commander, so the benefit was realized at all altitudes.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Finn,

Stability is improved with SuperStream because the elevators (and tabs) cruise in a neutral position. SuperStream Commanders find, and maintain the "step" more easily.

Our mod works by achieving the same "downdraft", as you call it, with all surfaces in stream, stab-elevator-tab, instead of stab down, elevator down, and tab up. We simply do the same downward lift job, but with less drag. The dividend is greatest in the regime of small elevator deflections. As deflection increases, such as in a climb, or descent, the benefit is less.

There are 18 SuperStream Commanders now in service, with no reports of handling issues. I know of a few SuperStream Commander owners who regularly cruise in the high-teens, but am not sure if anyone has flown at FL250. I don't expect any issues.

Jim
