Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Bob,

Thanks, very nice report.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

What's happening to this mod. Hope the sale of CPAC etc is not going to stop all developments for the "old" fleet.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Wynand,

Mr. Strauss remains a mystery to me, we'll have to wait and see what he has in mind. Meanwhile, design of the stab attack mod is done but still more testing to go.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

I would be the first buyer once the STC is done. Would you be able to do the vertical stab SB doubler rib at the same time?

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Interesting that you say that about Mr. Strauss, as the CPAC info made it sound as though you were a key player, Jim. N115CE is for sale, as you know, but not going anywhere fast except when I am flying it ;-) I am still keeping my eyes on this 8 knot mod, should the plane not sell and finances improve a bit. Keep us posted from time to time.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Wynand,

There are no more vertical fin doubler kits available. Since I found a forward (hidden) crack in my 31J after disassembling her tail, I am compelled to work out a solution. At the moment, my approach is to rebuild her fin using the B-model rib available from CPAC. Will keep you posted.

Jim-I know that you said "hiden"---but there must be a way to get a view of the specific crack that you found ------

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi John,

Very challenging inspection. Cracks near the forward lightening hole have hidden from a few other owners as well. Much easier with the rudder removed, but that is not always convenient. I keep looking for a good steerable long-reach borescope but most of the gadgets out there are not very useful.

The upper rib surfaces in this area are also somewhat viewable by pulling out the stab root seals and looking in from the side but that also is not very convenient.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Marc,

I just saw a recent Harbor Frieght ad for what appears to be the same tool (I believe it was around a hundred bucks). As to the fact that it is of the same industrial quality; would still need to be determined...

Regards - Clark

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Thanks Clark. It sounds like the diagnoses has all ready been made in this case, but if there is doubt, a small camera may show the extent of damage in questionable areas that are otherwise tough to inspect. Ridgid tools are high quality and expensive, and may be overkill for this job, so he may want to consider a more affordable option.

regards

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

I just made this same inspection prior to the Alaska flight when I did not find the double row of rivets. Pulled the rudder and used the long borescope to examine the whole area. Found I had the "A" mod and it was holding up well.

When Jim gets the stab mod done, Mr. Wessels and I might arm wrestle to see who gets the first one. I too would like the 'B' mod performed at the same time if possible.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Arm wrestle? In Northern Canada the gun still rules!
How about a poll to determine how many still need this SB done?

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

I know I need the Mod done...I believe there was talk about this sometime back. Lots of owners need the Mod from what I remember! Someone was going to talk with Carl at CPAC about getting these kits built, but haven't heard anything yet!

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Hi Marc,

I've tried the rigid, snap-on, walmart, etc versions of inspection snake but none give me the illumination and clarity I need for crack detection. So far my favorite is the Provision 618 but still tedious to use effectively.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

In 2004 we discovered the attached crack. Very surprised to find it where it was.
Repair attached.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Thomas, the reply from Carl in May '09

"We are in the process of having more doublers made. The SB requires 3 and I
only have 2 on hand."

I think this CPAC/ Strauss deal has stopped all developments.

It would be good if the 114B model ribs are similar.

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Thanks for the info. I'll have to make a trip up there and see whats going on. I need to talk with Carl about getting a flight control rig done..maybe give me some time to snoop around a bit! Does anyone know what they charge to do the full rig?

Re: The "8 Knot Mod"

Thomas,

I was at CPAC last month for a complete rigging. Jeremy is certainly the expert on that and did a remarkable job.

That being said, it should have taken about 4-5 hours, however, I had an unexpected issue with a rudder bushing. Consequently, the additional troubleshooting, removal and reinstalling the rudder nearly doubled the time.

Carl, Dave and Jeremy bent over backwards to ensure the job was done timely and properly. Can't say enough about the service. Top notch.
