Yes, we all spend a lot of $$ on the things our Commanders must have, but usually for the holidays we all splurge a bit for at least one item that we want and don't necessarily need. What are you looking at?

Personally, I'm thinking the AeroCreeper with locking castors would be a nice present for myself. Anyone have one already? Pirep?

That would make belly and under wing cleaning much easier....my gift from my wife this year is the Clarity Aloft Link Headset.....PIREPS would be appreciated on those as well.

We evaluated a number of options for that type of headset and ended up purchasing these:

They sounded better than the Clarity models. There is generally a wait for them, as the guy that makes them is a one horse show..
 
I've been using the clarity aloft for a number of years now and if properly inserted in the ear, it is quieter than my lightdpeeds.
Makes a huge difference out here in the heat to not have to deal with the sweating from the ear cups. I give it a 10 rating.
 
I am with Neal - I have the Halo QT's - but - opted to swap out the foam ear pieces for molded silicon. They cut out the noise, very comfortable, and definitely not heavy. There will be a wait for them. My only thinking is the box and wiring seem a bit "light" in construction, but, they've held up for 5+ years without any issues or challenges.

I am waiting for the AeroCreeper with a screw jack powered by a cordless drill. Getting up and down is my problem. I purchased by Christmas presents to myself on Cyber Monday.

I had the QT headset before the clarity alofts. I still have them and I liked them a lot but because of the way that they are built you can't really get the foam insert properly into the ear. The earpieces on the clarity alofts are much smaller and it allows me to actually insert the foam earpiece properly into the ear canal.
Don't get me wrong I liked the QT headset and it held up very well for probably 10 years.
 
Just an FYI, I really wanted to try an in-ear headset and purchased the UFQ BT L2 in-ear headset (they claim "just as good as Bose"...spoiler alert, they're not). For me, its a no-go on the UFQ unit (ATC can't understand me very well).

Will be looking at the QT and Clarity Aloft options. I know Faro has one also. Glad to have some pirep's on a few of these models.

My A&P has one without locking casters, and I have borrowed it for two underwing jobs. LOVE the AeroCreeper, and locking casters would be a very welcomed addition to an already great design.

For me, though, the song "All I want for Christmas..." comes to mind. I just want an airworthy aircraft!! Haven't flown since returning from the fly-in and can only hope I'm able to return it to flight before the New Year.

Doug,

Look at how the ear pieces attach. Halo uses standard sized sound tubes - which means easy to get connectors. I had silicone ear plugs made with "L" shaped connectors in them. This removes the need for foam pieces and makes a better fit/seal.

You can make them yourself, or an audiologist or gun shows or sometimes larger gun shops. Anywhere that sells quality hearing protection should be able to help.

Glen, I've had my AreoCreeper for 5 years now. Locking casters is a must. I don't think it was an option when I bought mine. I spend a lot of time repositioning myself because I'm always rolling away from the area I'm working on.

Dean, thanks for the info on modifying the ear plugs. I'll give that a try. The other issue is that ATC can't hear me too well. So I'll test that again also. If communication fails the test, I'll give another manufacturer a try. Just hate spending $400-$500 for each test!! There are 3 I am looking at:
1. QT (New to me, but recommendation by Neal gives credence)
2. Faro
3. Clarity Aloft

You should be aware that the microphones on those types of headsets are very directional and it's easy to get it rotated the wrong direction. If that happens then ATC won't be able to hear you. That's the first thing I would check. I don't have any experience with the faro, but I do own both a pair of QT and clarity aloft. I like the clarity a lot better as it fits further into the ear then the QT allows for.
 
Joel, thanks for the tip. I will definitely look at the directional aspect of the microphone and test again (didn't think about that). Actually, I like the UFQ unit, as long as the communication with ATC is good.
 
Love the aero creeper, I have the larger wheels - recommended - but not the locking ones. I tend to get on it and scoot to where I need to be, not sure how easy the locks would be to actuate once you are on it.

My wife got me an AeroFlask..... it was an ironic gift and I commented that it was the perfect cockpit companion :-|
