SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Tommy:
OK, back on line. As I said, it has been one hell of time keeping the businesses stable.Almost no time to fly or do anything.

Looking good now for the 27th. Ran into one problem with the plane in that one of the mid wing fuel drains is leaking really bad. I pulled it last night and found the O ring was broken. I have to find one somewhere. The parts manual does not show it, it only shows the valve.

So, If I have some time this weekend I will have to run around the airport to see if anyone has anything line this.

So if I stop the leak I should be there.

Jeff

I'm pretty sure you can get the part number from the Saf-Air web site. Otherwise, call them and they will give it to you (been there). It's an MS-something o-ring. (The mid-wing fuel drain is a Saf-Air F75, which you'll need to know when looking on their web site.)

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

I'll be at my hangar tomorrow and will confirm # for you. (If someone doesn't provide it first) Are you using the replacement F75 or the OEM original?

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Thanks Guys:

Hey Bill, yea, it seems that it is an F75. See pics.

I will also try their sight with Franks Suggestion.

Thanks again

Jeff

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Found my notes from when I spoke with Saf-Air about this same problem.

According to them, the large outer o-ring that seals between the lower wing skin and the valve is an MS29513-020. The MS29513 uses a fuel resistant rubber compound.

The small o-ring used inside the valve is an MS29513-006.

HOWEVER (big however) ...

When Sven and I were changing these the -006 seemed too small to stretch safely onto the valve. I can't find which o-ring we actually used, but I remember clearly we did not use the -006.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Perfect!

I only need the big one.

Thanks again to all.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Jeff- Hope you get the leak stopped. We are on for the fly in. If you are still down, let me know and I'll drop over early in the AM and pick you up. It is only a few minutes over there and it would allow me to warm up the bird and get it out. Just let me know if you want a PU and drop off.

Tommy:

OK, Let me see if I can get this done quick. It is a simple job, so I should be OK, but I will let you know after the weekend.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Jeff,

The pic is of an OEM and not the F75. The OEM is not considered to be "rebuildable" which is a huge ripoff given the new price. That being said, if you have some eye/hand coordination, it is possible to change out the small internal o-ring that seals the stem tip. Better to switch to the F75 when you find the internal seal starting to leak. It can be easily disassembled for seal replacement. Didn't get to the hangar on Thursday and I forgot (!!!!) to check the size today but a -20 sounds a bit small to me. (like 0.010" clearance outside the threads which is not enough) I will check this shortly. If you remain stymied on obtaining a new one, I can mail one to you. Spruce in GA also has the kits on the shelf.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Bill:
Well that is good to know. The unit is not leaking from the inner seal, it seem to be leaking just from the seal to the wing sheet metal. When unscrewed it from the wing, the O ring around the seal was pretty beat up and torn.

So I really think I only need the outer O ring that mates to the wing.

Thank you for looking.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

ck the price of them if you are having lots of problems finding the right o-ring just buy the whole drain and get that bird in the air. We have flying to do Jefferry!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

It's generally a good PM item to change the mid-wing sump drain seals every three years @ annual. Even with the proper material, fuel still works on the rings (assuming you are using the drains!) and time after three years is certainly likely but perhaps borrowed time. Then there will be those that will wait for the blue stains before changing... ;-)

Roger That Boys

Thanks for the input Bill and Lonnie, I will just buy two new ones and say the hell with it.

So I want to get the F 75's, correct?

Scott:

Attached is a pic of that processor I used for the voice over phones deal.

So you can see how straight forward it will be to plant it right inside a set of phones!
This is the kind of silicon we used with the Flight Companion.

May all of you have a great Turkey Day. Looks like we will be at Tom's on Sat.

If I don't get 08J in the air by Wed, I may take you up on the ride Tom.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

SafAir F75's are the correct item. (and I WILL have the flange o-ring spec for you tdy @ noon... sorry for the delay.)

Note before you purchase the F75... your OEM unit may be "locked" open to drain w/o standing at the drain. The F75 does not offer that feature. The ready availability and quick rebuild has been more valuable to me than the lock open feature on the use-and-throwaway OEM; but just so you have all the facts before taking the plunge...

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Advised Jeff via email but just to confirm for anyone else following the thread that Frank's recollection is (as absolutely usual and customary) correct. The flange o-ring for the OEM drain is a -20

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

SE Commander fly in is getting close, do we have a head count, or spinner count.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Hi Ken--Looks like 5-7 planes plus Dave Straka is going to drive in with his wife and child. Pat and Kiko from MLB, Jeff from Flagler, Bill Worley from Fort Lauderdale, Ian and possibly Lonnie thru your place with the potential of Dan Moody. If everyone makes it, it would be 7 planes plus mine. I hope the weather holds....Not looking as good as it did, but it is a few days off, so who knows...

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Ken, I'm just watching weather. If all ok, I will be departing about 3pm Friday from NOLA for Albany. Will let you know.

Re: SE Commander Fly In--11/27@ 9:00

Weather is looking a little "iify" for Saturday, but too early to make a decision. I will keep my eye on the weather and if it looks marginal we can put the fly in off for a week or so. Weather input tomorrow from participants appreciated.
