Re: New member

Tinting helps quite a bit.

Re: New member

Let me turn to Bob Tippens here. He ownsd a 112TC 1 Serial number from mine.

Bob - your thoughts on operating a 112TC in Texas ? I presume you didn't have an AC in there. I do like the dual alternators for redundancy on the 114TC though ,.

Re: New member

i've been to Texas a number of times. If it's that hot I fly 11.5-12.5. always been nice and cool, maybe 50 degrees or so as I remember. You're gonna be hot however if you've got an inversion.

Re: New member

how's that for night flying ? or your instruments only anyway at night ..
The tint looks darker then it really is. I can see fine at night. The tint is lighter on the door windows then the back ones. The glare is greatly reduced and better UV protection. This pic shows the front widows lighter.

Re: New member

Looks good.
My window replacement is on the list but lower down.
I may tint my current windows and if i like it, i 'll re-apply on the new windows.

What % tints if you remember ? 3M or something more airplane specific.

ps. back to Gary : Don't rule the 112TC out. It has ~400 lbs useful load (2850 TC Max gross or 2950 TCA) on the straight 112 and not that far off from the 114.
Above 9K feet - it starts beating the 114. The 114TC is indeed a nice bird and that would be my only trade if i moved from the 112TC platform but the OPEX would also reflect that.

Re: New member

restating John's post on the models just slightly

112 or 112As : Max gross 2650
112Bs : Max Gross Wt 2800 . #Rumor this aircraft is a 112A with 112TC wings.
112A or Bs can be turbo-normalized : Referred to as HS (HotShots).
112HS : Turbonormalized conversion kit. Not to be confused with a 112TC (we have a bouncer at the door checking for ID)

112TC : Max Gross 2850 + TurboCharged 210 Horses
112TCA : MAx Gross 2900 + TurboCharged 210 Horses
TC or TCAs are 95% the same. Nicer ergonomics on the TCA.

114 : 3140 Max Gross
114A : 3280 Max Gross

114Bs : 1992+ . 3260 Max Gross Wt
114TC : 1995+ : 3305 Max Gross Wt

115 or 115TC are the same as the 114Bs and 114TCs - probably with nicer leather.
115-SuperCommander : An Aerodyme IO580 Conversion for the 114 or 115. Not sure about changes to operating limitations ..

Re: New member

strange that the 12TC has the a lower climb rate then the 112A?? Also thought I read somewhere that the wing life on the 112's are around the 6500hr range compared to the 114's 15,000hrs

Re: New member

wing life limits:
112/A 6945 hrs.
112B 8878
112TC 10908
112TCA 7947
114 19284
114A/B 14812
114TC 10349

Re: New member

a bit fuzzy, but here's a chart.

Judi

Maybe in MPH :) or at 20K feet.

112TC:
Sea-level to 4000 feet TAS is about 137-140 Kts at 75% MCP. 132 Kts at 70% MCP.

4K to 16000 feet, my TAS increases linearly by 1-2 Kt per 1000 feet.
So 10K feet at 75% MCP : 148Kts at ISA.

I get 99% of book numbers.

e.g. i operated at 70% MCP coming to Florida.

At 3.5K Feet - 70% MCP ~ISA should give me 133 Kts. It was 53F - about 12C. With 2 degrees of ISA.

Actuals : 134 Kts TAS.

That spreadsheet 's performance numbers are all over the place .. see my post :)

I used the static cling type tint. Don’t use the glue it will ruin the windows. I used Gila tint. https://www.gilafilms.com/for-auto/static-cling-tint
I used the dark for the rear and light I think for the front. On the web site it shows how much heat and glare it reduces. Makes it easier spotting traffic.

Re: New member

I get 148 kts TAS at 11,500 at 75% power. My bucket list includes the "8 kt mod" at Aerodyme

Re: New member

The 114TC is good for about 15-20 more @ 75% at the same altitude. 160 to 165 TAS at 11k or 12k in the cool months. Of course you gotta spend a bit more gas to get it ;).

which is right in line with book performance at ISA.

I'll rebuild this table with more accurate numbers from the respective POHs.

Re: New member

Welcome to the club Gary...I had a Sundowner back in the late 70's Went on a cross country trip Phoenix to Milwaukee the day the controllers went on strike. We were wheels up at 0430 before the 0500 deadline. Filed IFR got about 150 miles northeast of Phoenix and the speaker went out. (Back in those days most didn't own a headset)..made a caution stop in Alb. and bought a headset..back in the game!! Found out the speaker had a loose wire..Had fun with the Sundowner, but it was too slow. Anytime I needed something for it had to pay the Beechcraft price. Bought my Commander back in 2010 and love it. Hope you love your new bird when you find it

Re: New member

Thanks, Terry

We sold our sundowner for a debonair but the didn’t end well. I have been looking at sierras, but want more speed and something more modern. So far we like the I’m Commander interiors an I really like the lycoming power.

I’m thinking the 114’s would be our choice but I’m looking at 112’s too. Not sure what the ‘hot shots’ are but if we can reach in the 140+ knots I’m interested. I am following another post that members were talking about selling their 112’s. So much to read and investigate. Once the holidays pass I’ll have more time to dig in.

Re: New member

Just remember Gary ... every pilot lies about 3 things:
  1. How fast they cruise
  2. How little oil they burn
  3. How much they gained from whatever that latest mod they invested in
.

Everyone, except me, of course.

Re: New member

On the other hand, you can get a 5 knot improvement at the time you paint the aircraft through selecting the right colours. There’s a little known fact, with some substantiative research, that air molecules become more slippery when in the presence of blue and gold paint. With our bird at 45% white, we are able to take advantage of this fluxation effect.
