Re: New member

I used the static cling type tint. Don’t use the glue it will ruin the windows. I used Gila tint. https://www.gilafilms.com/for-auto/static-cling-tint
I used the dark for the rear and light I think for the front. On the web site it shows how much heat and glare it reduces. Makes it easier spotting traffic.

I've been looking to tint my windows for the past few months but I can NOT find the 35%VLT static cling tinting! I can find 20% static cling type on numerous sites and I can find 35% with the "glue," but can't find the static 35%! All my research points to 20% up front being too dark at night...

Call Gila and tell them you can’t find it. They will probably send you some.

The only thing ever verified to produce 5 knots true TAS gain beyond just bolting in a bigger engine, is the Flux Capacitor. Period. And no one is making them at this time.

Yep! And, unfortunately the last one was just destroyed in an accident.

Mike,

I contacted Gila back in August and was told that the 35% was discontinued. I spoke to another pilot at a hamburger social that used a product from a company called Greenfilm(greenfilmusa.com) and was very satisfied. I found this chart on their website.

Re: New member

Scott,

The Flux Capacitor was discontinued in North America due to voltage incompatibility issues. However, a little known start up in Kreckblackistan is offering a beta version for testing. The only challenge is the installation manual and POH supplements have not been translated into English yet.

Re: New member

Gary,
I hope that yours and Mary's recovery is continuing to move along.

To everyone on this thread, Gary and I both had Sundowners (I still have mine - 20 year old son is training in it) and we both fell in love with the pilot's side door and large cabins of that Beech type. When I was ready to move up in speed and complexity, the only two types that met my criteria were the Commander 114B and Cirrus SR22.

Gary, I don't think you will regret moving into a Commander. I zeroed in on the 114B, but there are obviously alot of owners perfectly happy with the various 112 models and the earlier 114A's.

It is just a great air frame period.

I now have my dream panel installed in mine and looking forward to an engine OH probably late this year (at 1935 TTH now, but the engine is running great).

Good luck on your continued recovery and do not hesitate to contact me if you need any additional information on these great airplanes. And don't forget about the best asset of this type club - Judi Anderson. I cannot imagine buying one of these airplanes without her help and expertise.

Steve,

Thanks for the well wishes. I am almost ready to toss the cane, been walking without for the most part until I get tired. Mary is doing better each day.

I had a nice conversation with Judi yesterday. I think the best fit for us will be a 114. I'm working on getting back in a plane and in the air in the next couple of weeks and then get Mary up too. If my bride is good to go we will push forward on the hunt for the perfect 114 for us.

I'm contacting insurance to get a few ballpark quotes and checking with my AME for any paperwork he will need as a follow up to all my medical issues resulting from the accident. I should be fine, I'm taking no meds, haven't since surgery and I'm pretty much back up to speed.

Thanks Will! I missed this post 3 weeks ago. I'll check out that web site. I'm doing this project post-annual in March so I've got plenty of research time!

Before doing the TBO criteria, read Savvy on doing it "on condition." Sobering how many hours beyond TBO you can operate without concern, given oil sampling/Borescopic inspections/filter splitting/etc.

Believe me I am. Changing oil & filter every 25 hours and sending a sample at every oil change in for analysis.

I am not going to change that thing out at 2000 TTH unless I see a reason!

Re: New member

and check the oil screen.

Microscopic particles : Oil analysis
Bigger Flakes : Oil Filter - cut it open
Even bigger parts : Oil screen

i used to do this (oil screen only at annual). Now its an oil change ritual ..

Good point and yes, I do check the oil screen. Interesting note - I bought this airplane back in June of 2018. We checked the oil screen and it looked like it had never been checked - lots of metal. We cleaned it and of course sent in the oil for analysis. Bottom line - after three oil changes, the screen remains clean and the oil analysis has improved by a large margin with each of the last two changes. The fourth oil change is currently at the lab now.

Thanks, Judi!

I'm still waiting on my insurance quotes but the search continues for a 114. I would love to get a ride if I can but with winter weather I know its a pain getting around. I'm sure the hunt will continue to move forward.

Re: New member

Count me as a 114B owner without an AC...and one who is already thinking about the waits on the ramp for delayed clearances or just waiting in line for TO at one of the busy Dallas or Houston Class B airports in May - September. It can be brutal, especially if you are like me and fly for business reasons at times. I typically fly in the night before a meeting because I know that I will not be in good presentable condition to meet with anyone after one of those flights.

Still, I am not sure that I would want to sacrifice the weight for an AC system. The 114B's have a decent full fuel payload, but not enough to be adding weight to the air frame without carefully considering the weight penalty.

Still, on certain days in August I could probably be persuaded to make that compromise....
