N1340J to SW Virginia

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

What oil and air filters are you guys using? I didn't find much when I search for "oil filter" and "oil change". I have the PN (6435683) from the catalog but it doesn't translate into much. Any oil recommendations while we are on the subject?

I run Aeroshell 15W-50 year round in 26J although you'll find lots of opinions on oil among pilots. Lycoming has official recommendations if you go hunting through their engine data. And not a bad idea to see what the previous owner was running - if the engine was happy with what the previous owner used it's worth considering leaving well enough alone. And you'll use the standard Champion CH48110 oil filter. There are Tempest equivalents and perhaps others out there but for something that gets changed every 25 hours I don't worry about it too much.

I and a few others run the Challenger CP-2100 high-flow filter. Opinions on these vary from 'it gave me 5 extra knots' to 'it was like throwing my money into a fire'. :) I've definitely picked up some extra MP but then I've also installed the complete later style induction system in 26J so hard to say where the improvement all comes from.

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

I use Phillips XC multi with Camguard. (I used to use Aeroshell before I found enlightenment!) p.s. if you want some fun, search here for oil recommendations. It's like asking Dog lovers what dog food to use -- or not use. ) I do like this advice though:

I do not like or recommend either of the two semi-synthetic oils that are
available, Aeroshell 15W-50 or Exxon Elite. Both contain PAO synthetic
basestock which in my opinion, is the worst possible basestock for use in
aircraft (but great for cars). Aircraft engines contaminate their oil with a
lot of blow-by fuel. PAO is horrible in dealing with contamination and
this lead to greater varnish and carbon deposits throughout the engine.

The Aeroshell 15W-50 and Plus oils also contain a triphenyl phosphate
anti-scuff that decomposes and attacks seals in the engine. Camguard
protects seals from this chemical attack.

The Elite (which I did the initial research on when I worked at Exxon
Research) contains a multi-functional (dispersant) viscosity modifier which
holds water and forms a soft brown sludge in cool running aircraft.

I recommend Phillips 20W-50 or Aeroshell W100 oils. And of course with
Camguard as the additive package to prevent rust and deposits, reduce wear

What is everyone using to dip their tanks for an accurate "less than topped off" reading?

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

Hi Landon, I use the Fuelhawk stick from Aircraft Spruce. Works like a charm. Mine is the green 11" generic one and I attached the calibration chart I created a few years ago.

As we both have 112/A it may be applicable for you as well. The best way to calibrate is empty the tanks and then add two gallon increments and take a reading....repeat until full and make a chart line mine !

As for the gear bell....every time mine goes off I think its RECESS !!

And when calibrating the dipstick, don't forget to have the fuel selector in the "OFF" position to avoid any possibility of fuel transfer between the tanks... (Yeah - don't ask...)

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

1340J made it over to KMTV to grab lunch at Simply Suzanne's Cafe in the terminal and then went out for some night ops later in the evening.

Looks like a great day for flying.

BTW, put some air in that nose gear tire :)

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

Yah...... It was 23psi and the book calls for 31. We got it corrected! Keen eye though.

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

haha. Anytime you post a picture here of your Commander it will get many keen eyes checking it over.

You actually want more than 31 psi. Do a search here and you'll get more info about the issue.

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

Hi Landon,
I am positive you will enjoy 1340J! Missing the Commander. Moving to something else is not easy at all! Commanders are definitely a great plane.
Maybe I'll have one again someday... If I can convince my wife to use a step or stool of some sort...

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

Picked up a new set of paper weights from Joe LaRue over at Prairie Air. Need to get some paint matched, but they fit and look absolutely perfect.

Also, Jenna and I spent last Saturday down in Charleston. We landed at Mount Pleasant and just cruised around old downtown. We will definitely use KLRO going forward.

Re: N1340J to SW Virginia

good luck also to you! I also just purchased mine but yet waiting to fly it. Going through annual now and should be finished this week. You may be on my path home if I bring it to my Mass base at Taunton. Still deciding and also looking for some delivery help as I am new to the complex club.
