Hot Shot LOP?

Alright, I know this has been talked about a zillion times and we should run them how we want to but all this talk of LOP operation has gotten me thinking. Since the Tornado Alley TN Cirrus is to be flown LOP and since the "father" of our system has gone on record saying to fly it ROP are there any HS owners flying LOP? If so, tell me about your findings. I have always flown ROP but all this LOP talk has gotten me thinking.

I obviously don't have a HS and Robin designed the thing ... but Rick Langel and I will tell you that in the class we took at different times, The GAMI people went through many examples of both Lycoming and Continental turbos being run LOP as appropriate, with the proper instrumentation (engine monitor is essential,) and with balanced injectors (meaning usually, but not necessarilly, GAMI's.) You may or may not be able to meet those criteria with your setup.

Hmm.. well I was not goint o reply to this one, because I do not have much LOP experience in my Hotshot....

First let me say, I am an LOP believer. And it CAN be done in the Hotshot.

But I do not, nor can I recommend it. The problem comes in with the manual wastegate. As the nice folks at GAMI will explain, they have an automatic wastegate in all their systems. So when you try to do the "power replacement" (I believe that was George's term), things get a little dicey. I believe Sven's quote on the topic was pretty accurate "like balancing on the head of a pin".

You won't break anything if you try it though. I would recommend a copilot though. I think the magic LOP number was around 10.7GPH (highly altitude dependent). That being vs the normal 12GPH (which is not terribly variable). And do be aware that your TIT will often reach max (1650) before your EGTs peak.
