Fin Rib Kits

Re: Fin Rib Kits

I hope Jim does not mind me posting his instructions for inspection.

Here we go.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Thank you Roberto!

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Thanks to all yet again, I am scheduled for repairs on September 4th, so you won't see me at this years Fly-in. Jim thank you very much for your time and support of the Commander group. I'll be installing a few of Aerodyme's service kits including the new one for the Fin Rib. It'll all be repaired and done as part of an early annual, but I should never have to worry about the tail section again (knock on wood).

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Hi All,

Here is the updated chronology I had promised. Quite a saga!

There are some pics at the end of the chronology, and I have also included below some pics of the first installation of the new parts kit.

Seven of you have tentatively spoken for kits. I am hoping to find 20. Are any more of you interested in an initial special pricing? Each participant is very helpful in keeping your Commander engineering department open and available.

Thanks,
Jim

This might be one of those chicken/egg situations. You're asking people to commit before pricing is available, yet I'm sure more people are waiting for pricing before committing.

I suggest you consider providing a ballpark figure for the "initial special pricing" .vs. standard pricing after the initial offer expires.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Depending on the cost I would be very interested. My 112TCA sn 13176 does not show signs that any of the fin rib SBs were ever installed

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Hi Frank,

Actually, I would expect all orders to be conditional on an acceptable price.

If we can round up 20, I think I can do $1495 plus $125 for the DER report.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Jim R. I have 11 rivets in the 2nd row and you are having 12 installed. Why the 12th one?
If it is required can the 12th rivet be installed and accomplish what you are having done on the new stuff?

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Roberto,

Have it checked or check it yourself. I've been flying around with cracks, scary.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Hi Frank,

No, sorry, the 12th rivet is used with the Aerodyme kit to secure the side spacer at one additional location just forward of the doubler flange. Your installation does not have any side spacers so a 12th rivet would not be applicable.

Unless you observe any defects in your 56B / 12B parts, I think you are all set and no further action would be warranted. The difference would be that upgrading to the Aerodyme kit would delete the original spar remnant that remains in your airplane in favor of a full length new, and thicker, rib.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

I'll be having the Aerodyme rib installed locally beginning September 4th. I'll post with the field experience. I am expecting no issues.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Jim, Thanks for the explanation regarding the additional rivet.

Re: Fin Rib Kits

Jim,

Could you expand on the differences between the SB114-12B kit and the variant used on the 114B/TC? For those of us that do have the -12B (or corresponding SB112-56B on the 112s) kit installed, what improvement(s) does the 114B/TC rib bring to the table? Have you come across any airplanes with the -12B or -56B kit installed that redeveloped cracks?

Also -- for those that aren't aware -- the SB114-12B and SB112-56B kits introduced the "double rivet line" to the area just below the horizontal stabilizer. There were two earlier SB's released to try and fix the problem with cracking in that rib, neither of which quite did the trick.

Another side comment: When I bought my 114, the owners had the SB114-12B kit sitting in the hangar. The invoice showed it was free of charge from Commander (early '90s), but they never bothered to have their A&P install the kit. Even though the earlier SB had been completed and didn't show any signs of cracking, one of my first major maintenance events included having the -12B modification installed. Just for peace of mind.

How was the double row of rivets added?

How was the double row of rivets added?

The second row of rivets is for the attachment of the doubler called for in the SB. I've attached the SB for the 112s (originals are in the Manuals section of the main site). 114 is essentially the same.

Look at the last page and you'll see the profile view of the rib and doubler.SB-112-56B.pdf
