Elevator Inoculation

Re: Elevator Inoculation

Terry, you might consider leasing that crate on a repetitive basis. There will be some demand for awhile (especially when a terminating fix is approved) and it might pay for itself several times over. Heck, you might negotiate w/ the woodworker to make several and take a commission each time he leases one to an owner. There has already been at least one elevator destroyed in shipping so the need for high quality protection is very real. Perhaps stage them in different parts of the country or repair stations like ACW or AAS would lease them to send to their customers. You may have a qualified local shop that would be interested. A small biz opportunity!

Re: Elevator Inoculation

Hi Bill,

OK, but I am still a bit confused. Roy did a rudder for me in May, but declined to do another one for me in June, saying, and I quote him, "I am not going to do any more Commander stuff". So I sent it further across the country, to AAS.

Jim

Perhaps Roy objected to certain sources declaring his repair work carrying 8130 tag approvals as "non-airworthy" and those actions may have had an influence on accepting further work from those sources? Possible. ACW is still delivering first class repair work for a wide variety of airframes including AC11's.

Re: Elevator Inoculation

As Joel mentiond before, there was definately a hint that only certain shops were approved! I think the ICT FSDO which controls the AD has, in fact, made that assertion. So, are they in charge or not?
Would be nice for members needing elevator repair to know what's really happening...

Re: Elevator Inoculation

The ACO has not approved specific shops to do the work. Any approved shop may do the work as long as they meet what the ACO has specified what constitutes acceptable means to comply with the AD and going forward, the ACO will control the authorization of any "Approved Repairs". There are multiple ongoing efforts to gain approval of a repair AMOC. They are "hoped for" w/in the next few months. While the FAA has been cooperative with COG efforts (the inspection AMOC is an example), trying to set concrete time tables is a fools errand.

Re: Elevator Inoculation

Seeing this resurface will strike the fear into you . .

Quick question for those with the kit installed.

Is there a specified interval that we have to pull the elevator, de-skin access to the kit area and inspect the spar beneath the inoculation kit?

Hopefully just having a "Senior's Moment" :o. . . seems like I recall something about that in the STC though.

Re: Elevator Inoculation

Short answer is no. Unless you find a suspect crack on the forward side, but there is a super long bolt with a nut plate that allows you to push the doubler back after removing the hinge mount bolts. If there is dye and a line on the aft side with a borescope, probably time to start crying.

Thanks Craig,

So far so good, looks like I might actually make the 150 hr mark prior to annual this year (first time):). Just thinking ahead.

Best of a weekend,
John

Hi All,

This will be the last call for orders for 44285-RE2/SP elevator inoculation kits at $425 per side. Costs of everything are going up and that wave is starting to hit us. The RE2/SP program has inoculated 350 Commander elevators since 2011 with no reports of any spar troubles developing after inoculation. On the other hand, the calls for replacement spars keep coming in for elevators never inoculated.

Thanks,
Jim

I for one feel much more at ease with that dull yellow mod installed back there!! :) Thanks Jim!!

Jim, what is the lead time on the parts ? Do I need your spar to install them on ? Thanks Kiko.......

Jim this is the first I have seen this posting! Can you take a moment and explain what it is ant what AD it deals with? If you want you can send me a separate email.
