2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Just flying the red rock country around Sedona will be a mini-canyon flight. You are in for a treat coming from FL. You'll cross some spectacular country in northern NM then relatively barren high desert for a breathtaking breakout into the Oak Creek canyon and the area around Sedona. It will be a nice circle down to the SEZ airport mesa so you'll want your camera out. Little like being in a giant pinball machine w/ red rock bumpers. What a blast.

As a flatlander, don't forget you are at altitude... no full rich in the pattern.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

We have had many, but always optional (what else could they be?) fly-outs on days prior to the actual Fly-In, up to and including Friday morning. There are no "rules" that I am aware of but it has always seemed that we tried to hang around the airport starting appx. Friday lunch, to meet and greet, see everyone, etc. So prior to that, it is fair to say Fly-out's at the Fly-In have been encouraged. I would love to find a good local instructor to ride with me or whoever, and take a group of us on an a tour to various. points.

Anyone interested in such an approach?

Good point

And for the Turbocharged folks - get used to leaning for takeoff .. When hot and High the TC's will never spin up and make full power. Requires some leaning (per the POH) to be safe.

Scott, I'm CFII but I don't think I meet your definition of a "good" flight instructor so I opt out of this adventure.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Curious. What do you think my definition of a good flight instructor would be?

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Good looking, female, free!

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Buys (several) rounds of drinks after flights...

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Joel has the right idea but, good looking, female, and free all in the same sentence? Things must be different in Arizona.. I'll be there for the fly-in!

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

All I want is someone who knows the mountains and canyons really well and can lead us safely to sights and perhaps a landing or two that otherwise we would not know about or not know if they were safe. It was just a few years ago that a bunch of Bonanzas with very experienced pilots flew up a blind canyon (in California, I am pretty sure) and two of them did not make it out.

Hmmmm, I was just in Denver last weekend, 95 degrees. Leaning when you're not pulling much power is a must, but when it came to full TO, I used full rich and the engine ran just fine, the turbo spooled up normally(usually takes a two or three second pause between 30 and 35 inches, then runs right up to 42. have my hand on the throttle to pull it back just in case It goes a bit over. I'm thinking production variances for the different techniques on take off. As for climb, I use full rich, and everything but the Oil remains nice and cool.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

I wouldn't expect a Turbocharged (or Turbonormalized) engine to require leaning on t/o (at least below it's critical altitude..), since you would be generating sea level (or better) manifold pressure.

Normally aspirated.... yeah, better lean it out!

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

I am attaching a copy of page 3-5 from the lycoming TO360 manual. I have highlighted the section dealing with leaning at altitude.

My experience with two completely different engines in my plane (both TO360's and all new accessories) is that I can get full power from the engine if I start a takeoff roll and allow it to build, but I can get power quicker and use less runway when high and hot if I use the Lycoming recommended procedure.

My typical takoff in these conditions is, line up, brakes locked 30" manifold pressure and lean to1500TIT, increase mp to 34 and adjust mixture to achieve 1500TIT, release brakes and slowly increase mixture while monitoring mp to limit at 42".

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

I tried to get Sue and I signed up, complete with tent size shirt. Pay-Pal says it cannot take my money because of an email problem with the seller.
and the Google link doesn't even work

Should I just send a check to Bob?

Try using Internet explorer. Let me know if that does not work. Don't forget to confirm by submitting through the other form on top of the pay pal cart also.
