2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Jerome is a must side trip if you have time. Rob's Mom and Dad lived there and the museum has photos of them. Amazing! It's a really nice drive.

Our COG link has lots of this info available with websites.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

courtesy of my friend George Krueger fm Sedona:

Here are a couple recent pics of the restaurant exterior. Interior wall-framing is up. Supposedly the Sedona Airport Authority will pay for and install the kitchen. The current schedule calls for the facility to be turned over to the new operator in August, he will install the remainder of the interior (seating, stage, bar,, carpet and floor coverings, wall decor, etc.). Opening is planned for early September.

This restaurant will be a breakfast-lunch-dinner-evening operation, with entertainment some evenings. Supposedly daytime prices will be competitive with our area ($9 breakfasts and so on). I believe they will eventually have a liquor license to go with the evening entertainment. There will be a meeting area for pilots. Views of the runway and the rock formations are great. There will eventually be outdoor seating under those trees as well.

The new restaurant is one step in upgrading the whole airport mesa in an integrated fashion, as city budgets permit. The upgrades will include improvements to the viewing area at the mesa entrance that looks north over the city and the panorama of rock formations beyond. There's already a sizable motel on the mesa and the restaurant will be a good fit with that. Other developments will utilize the open land and mesa-edge view sites for businesses that make the whole area a nice destination for visitors and locals.

George

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Small town AZ - Wouldn't bet on it being open for the fly in.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

I was going to go to Sedona. Been there before and it is a great place. Got my insurance requirements out of the way last year at 57AZ and it is not far from Sedona. Has a very good restaurant on the field.

However our Airport Appreciation Day is 9/24. I might be able to fly down for a couple of days but not sure as there is a lot of work involved putting on our event.

Will see.

The Sedona Oak-Creek Airport Authority is the governing ageny with regard to to the construction and operation of the restaurant. They have confirmed that the project is on schedule and the building will be turned over to the new operator on August 1st. While no one has complete control over a construction schedule, the restaurant is scheduled to open for business on Sept. 1st.

If they get it open in time I will buy you a drink there. (Or anywhere else if they don't get their liquor license. Last rest. there had one.)

The website features a webcam on the airport mesa that step-rotates continuously. One of the stops is the runnup area for Runway 03, sometimes you'll see an airplane there. The other stops are various views over Sedona and the rock formations. Clarity varies somewhat with the time of day and the angle of the sun.

What the chance of an organized fly-out over the Grand Canyon?. My wife and I are excited about flying from Florida to Sedona. Great plan on the fly-outs Scott. Count me in. Thanks, Dan the Commanderman.

Hi Dan,

Glad you're coming to the Sedona Fly-In. While COG does not formally organize any Fly-Outs' during the annual 'Fly-Ins', that's never stopped individual members from doing so, and they have done many at past Fly-Ins. As I recall, there is a Special Flight Rules Area over the Grand Canyon and perhaps someone more familiar with the area might chime in here.

Although not by air, there is a planned tour of the Grand Canyon listed on the Sedona Fly-In website. It's scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 21st, for those arriving early. Robin Lee is coordinating that effort and can be contacted at carlrobinlee@msn.com.

Re: 2011 Sedona Fly-In News

Low flight over the canyon is not an option. Take a look at the Grand canyon chart.

There are some other really nice flights like Lake Powell, Canyon De Chelly, Monument Valley.
