What are you listening to?

Re: What are you listening to?

Mix it up with Smashing Pumpkins, Flo Rida, & Tragically Hip. This type of music keeps one alert.

Re: What are you listening to?

Boy you guys are blessed if you get flight following 95% of the time. The Phoenix TRACON will turn you down 95% of the time. It's so much of an issue that most won't even bother. The problem has been finally brought to light, primarily after a Twin Commander crashed into the Superstition Mountains, killing 6, after being turned down for flight following., The faa is supposedly aware of the issue and looking into it.

Certainly more relaxing than that sh!t kickin' music you kept playing in Alaska! :D

You referring to the horn he was tootin' from the back seat??

Re: What are you listening to?

Joel,
You're definitely right about that! Phoenix TRACON hates giving pilots flight following. I don't think I've ever been able to get it out of Scottsdale!

Joe

Thanks for the input. Makes no sense to me. They are maned based on activities. More activities = more people to do the job, but they turn so many down. Seems counter productive.

Re: What are you listening to?

Gang,

TCAS with STING is the only way to go. I fly VFR with flight following when ever possible. If the system's there, use it. Having an extra set of eyes can never hurt.

NY ATC is surprisingly good at providing advisories, but handoffs are sporadic particularly if transiting the NY Bravo from east/north to west/south. They get all mashed up between the three big airports with Teterboro thrown into the mix. They also have a habit of routing you all over the place even while VFR.
I don't always ask during the peak traffic times as I know it is 50/50, however I do have a TIS box showing the traffic which helps quite a bit.

There was quite a bit of that from both of us I am afraid!:o

XM 33 - 1st Wave

Re: What are you listening to?

Led Zepplin & Yes to Alan Parsons (On Air Album is all about flying).

Use Flt Following frequently but not always. Nice to have but don't ever relax because of it, once had the tower at DWH turn a Citation directly into me - in the traffic pattern! So even with FF it all depends on the Controllers workload... and attention span.

Another caution if you're not aware, with the modern ATC system the controller will never even be aware of an airplane without an active transponder - primary radar is almost completely gone. (My wife just retired after 30yrs as an ATCS).

This coming from the man that was constantly pulling the throttle back past 14" and saying "What bell?"

I still don't know what bell you are talking about! :D

Re: What are you listening to?

Stairway to Heaven is my favorite when climbing out on a night like yesterday (Hilton Head to Home in a Cessna Cardinal with a friend) A huge full moon rising over the Atlantic. The golden moon was too beautiful to play Bad moon Rising.

Re: What are you listening to?

Departing the Nashville area one night low IFR breaking through the tops with a full moon glowing over the cloud horizon. I’ve got Lou Rawls serenading from the 696’s XM through the headsets (“You’ll never Find”), thinking it just doesn’t get any better. ;) Looked over at the wife unit and she’s already asleep . . . Pop that bubble . . . .

Re: What are you listening to?

Another one: My stepson is a NASCAR fanatic so on a long x-country from Tx to Bama I dialed up the Sports channel so he could listen to “JR” do his thing. Only hitch, we were ‘flight following’ with the big guys, Houston, Memphis (flt following not a problem with the controllers down here in the SE) and every time they would contact other aircraft – their transmissions would override the XM channel. You can imagine the volume of radio traffic from those areas so sorry to say, my stepson didn’t catch much of his race . . .

Re: What are you listening to?

Once returning to ISP, I was IFR in IMC and water got into my vacuum filter.
The DG and AI quickly filled with water, lost both of them and my A/P wanted to try to fly upside down. I was listening to a R.E.M. CD and just then "It's the End of the World" started to play. NY ATC was somewhat helpful, told me bases were 1,100'. Had to use T/C, compass, and VSI to keep me right. Now I have dual vac / electric systems.
