Here are some progress pictures of my Universal Cowling project. This would be a cowling that would fit all 112/114 models, including 112HS, 112 Super, 114HS, 114 Super, not including 112TC/TCA/114B/114TC. It would be shipped as an unfinished part, but would be a platform for anyone that wanted a new cowling for their plane. Scoops, lights, inlets, etc would have to be added to make it compatible for your model plane.

It's basically a knock-off of the original, but fits better, and doesn't have the waves, high and low spots, flaws, etc. If made from Carbon Fiber would weigh in at about 19lbs, from Fiberglass about 27lbs.

Most, of the original cowls are patched, bondoed, reworked, or just plain shot, were never that great in the first place, and weigh in at over 40lbs.

Re: Universal Cowling

Very nice - Is the issue with the TC and TCA the inlet opening size?

Re: Universal Cowling

Awesome! Looks great!

Yes, size and location. But might still be better to buy and modify this than try to rebuild an original.

Intrigues me!!

Would love a new cowl.

Re: Universal Cowling

I for sure need a new cowl and am very interested as long as I do not need a whole bunch of mods.

I really only need the accommodation/scoop for the turbo I guess? I could not even worry about the 2 inlets on the bottom and do the intake mod you suggested for the RAM air heat source.

Re: Universal Cowling

With the Flow of air from bottom to top on a TC/A, would it be safe to say cutting out another inch from the bottom of the opening would give the required airflow to our Aircraft???

It was designed with the Hot Shot in mind, so all of the issues can be accommodated.

I think that might work. The factory TC/TCA cowl is different top and bottom, but I think you might be able to get by with just opening the inlets on the bottom.

Re: Universal Cowling

Does it have to be set? My lower is good, but my upper is in bad shape. Will your upper cowling fit my lower?

Re: Universal Cowling

Count me in for one if you're starting a list!

Re: Universal Cowling

Carl, you know I'm in.

Re: Universal Cowling

The TC band will be in if we can agree on common functional mods to this mod.

Agree. My upper is In pretty good condition per Jim Richards & did install the TC/A Aerodyme Heat Shield 3 years ago, but in a few years the area where the edgrs of the top cowl meet the top of the firewall (below windscreen and downthe sides might become an issue.

According to Sid the 112TC and the 114 cowling are very different (length) so we TC owners need to know exactly what mods we need to do for both engine cooling, air flow to the Muffler and Front cowl opening.
The question as to whether your top cowl would fit factory lower cowling is a critical ? The lower factory cowling on the TC has the larger cooling opening design, so keeping the lower cowl may solve that inflow cooling air issue as our engine baffling directs the air from under the cylinders to up & over.

PLEASE ADVISE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIESE FACTORS!

And saving 20 pounds … that would be most excellent.
