My bride and I are looking for local info on hotels, and things to do in Savanah. The historic district seems to be the place to explore but we are open to recommendations. We are thinking about the first week in May.

Finished flight school there back in 70 and my daughter was born there. "Hunter Army Airfield" and she's my Georgia Peach. Was there this time last year for a 4 day visit, we stayed at a Marriott Courtyard down close to the Historic district. Hop on, hop off buses around the corner from the hotel for getting around and most everything is within walking distance. The River Walk and district has really developed and they have some fine Hotels along the river. Lots of very good restaurants

We stayed with friends at the Ford Plantation a few years ago. We highly recommend the hop on hop off bus tour of old town. It’s highly informative. Check out the dates on some of the headstones in the cemetery,
they date back to before the civil war.
The buildings downtown near the water are something to see-chock full of history.
If you need some restaurant recommendations, I can ask.

Gary make sure you get out to Tybee Island and on the way plan a stop at The Crab Shack by all means!!

Mary locked in a hotel and I secured an SUV for the week. Mary is getting the trolley tour set up so that should be fun. I want to check out the 8th AF museum.

Sure would be nice if whoever handles the subscriptions gave me access to this forum. I paid my subscription back in February and I still can't get into the forums.

Gary,

If you haven't already visited, highly recommend checking out Jekyll Island. COG has held a couple of fly-ins there and it's both a historical and and charming place to visit. Be sure to check out Driftwood Beach. Bring your camera.

Bill,

We made the COG fly in there. We do want to check out Saint Simon’s island some time this year.

There’s a Navy reunion the last week of July there, yes I should go. I’ve just been through a time or 2, not explored any.

I’m kinda new to Charleston, been there a few times in recent years. I know it’s a ways away, kinda nice though.

Joe,
Mary and I really enjoyed Charleston. We hope to visit again. We are also looking at St. Simmons island as a place to check out.

Used to be a good BBQ joint on St Simons. You may even have used St Simons for fuel when leaving Jekyll?

Hi Gary, I hope I didn’t get in too late on this thread. There are lots of ways to approach Savannah. My choice is to get any hotel down close to River St on Bay St — look for best deals…like Hilton Garden, Hampton, Renaissance, etc. Don’t take hotels in other areas, not even other historic districts. The action is Bay St. You want to be along Bay St, period. Uber from Sheltair FBO (also Signature fbo but $$$) to your hotel and skip any rental car that way you won’t have to pay expensive hotel parking not to mention difficult and expensive (practically non-existent) parking in other areas. Use the trolleys or rent bikes to get around or just walk. There is enough to see without other distractions like Tybee, Jekyl, or Simons—-do that on another trip. Cathedral tours, Juliet Lowe Girl Scout house, Harbor areas, are things to do. Restaurants you don’t want to miss are Pink House (make reservation at least 2 weeks in advance), Pirate’s House, and maybe Paula Deen’s Lady & Sons Restaurants. Don’t miss the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum — see it either first from airport when you arrive or last when you depart as it is close by KSAV and you might use fbo courtesy car or short Uber ride over. You could spend an entire day there seeing the exhibits.

Jay,

I was hoping you chimed in. Mary booked us at the Hilton garden on Bay Street. I did rent a car, I don’t do Uber or taxis, story for another time. Good info on the restaurants too, thanks.

I want to do the museum so I’ll see how Mary does. I will say she did enjoy watching the recent apple tv series, masters of the air, so maybe arrival or departure day. It will
work out. .

This part of the country is just amazingly beautiful... the Lowlands! I'm so darn lucky to belong to a really cool golf club in Beaufort SC... Secession Golf Club...and I'm usually down in this part of the world regularly.

Nice track. And the little town of Beaufort is charming. Plus you get to land at Frogmore International elev 9'.

Yes Bill... it's awesome!
