Hmmm...do you have to upgrade to Pro 1000 to get an HSI? I've been reading up on it and all it says is the E5 has a DG...

That's my understanding Mike. With the E5 you get a DG but a software upgrade will make it into a Max.
However the way they implement the CDI in the instrument is very interesting - some videos on the Aspen site showing the operation. I'm replacing a very tired vac ADI & DG, so this option was very attractive compared to an overhaul of those components. Plus I don't need to purchase a CDI for the new Garmin GNX 375.
In my case I've never had an HSI so I wouldn't miss it. But if down the line they were to wave an attractive software upgrade offer at me, I could be tempted.
My install is scheduled for next month and I'll be sure to get some pictures including in-flight.
