Anybody on here going to OshKosh 2016? I've never been and would like to got this year. Who's going? Is it necessary to get there early and stay the entire week? Or is there better days to get there during the week and leave on Friday or Saturday? Someone give me the details etc. I'm not sure I'd want to stay the entire week but also not sure if once you land are you able to fly out each day or is the runways closed once event starts?

Someone give me details etc......

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Scott,
Depending on the time of week, we'll make it a flight of two at least up to Savannah Tn . . . to pickup a wingman or two . .

I've never been to Oshkosh but imagine its a Sun n Fun x 1.5
Sun n Fun has a 'detailed' NOTAM for arrival / departures and they have open times each day for aircraft movement. Once the air shows start you are locked down until the shows end then it's the wild wild west on departures. Not bad but you have to keep your eyes outside . .

You thinking about camping or will you get a room? Connie is not a (flying) camper.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

My oldest son & also pilot Conor and I go every year, fly in, camp in the North 40. We often see Sherman, Sid and a smattering of others at our Thursday and Friday evening soiree, which is basically hanging out by the plane, adult beverages, something on the grill. All are welcome

Pat Murphy and some others get there real early which is a thing to do for many (many, many) and leave by Wednesday typically.

Conor and I usually arrive Thursday late morning and depart Sunday morning. The night airshow, Wednesday and Saturday, is something absolutely, positively not to be missed.

North 40 Camping is often very hard to come by Sunday through Wednesday. But plenty head out Thursday morning. there are always open spots Friday and Saturday, the 2nd weekend.

Someone else with experience coming early can suggest how early you have to get it the first weekend to get a North 40 Spot. I am thinking Sunday morning? Saturday?

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I went a few years ago. Lots of fun! Didn't camp, but rented a house (a bunch of us) about a 10 minute walk from the field.

Thinking about flying in this year.

We should have a Commander Party one night.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I have never been, but am planning to go. Maybe arrive Sunday, and leave Wed. Not a camper but will probably go this route.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

We will be there again this year, camped at Scholler.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Flown in twice and camped (rv) twice. Must say flying in is cool, but after the excitement is over its time to set up for a week under the wing.. We stay all week so Scott's way doesn't work for us. Going to do the camper again this year. I'm getting to old for a tent and air mattress. First year we rented a class A motor home in South Bend and drove it in. Rentals near osh sell out fast. Highly recommended it and looking forward to at least having a happy hour meet up!

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Betty and I will be camping at Oshkosh, Saturday to Wednesday. We like to set up early and watch the flights coming in. It is also nice to talk to the vendors before the mass of novice come in to the show.
We generally pick up some of the fly ins to go to dinner off campus.
I will post a schedule for you plans closer to the show date.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Scott, Concur ref the night show, if its anything like Sun n Fun, it's a 'must' see.

Right now it looks like a couple of Bama crews (295TC and 114JA) headed up, House /car rental. Also toying with the idea of hopping up to Thunder Bay while we're that far North - then down though Michigan.
Will be hitting our 'friends to the North' for advice on airspace, customs, fees, etc . . .
Looking forward to 'stretching our wings' . . .

Re: Oshkosh 2016

The North Shore of Lake Superior is just spectacular. take it all the way around. Stop in the Soo and on Mackinac Island. I can give you many more stops and places to visit and see on the way down. Flying by Sleeping bear dunes is also spectacular.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Have gone for the last 4 yrs..met up with Scott and Coner...always flew commercial to Milwaukee to see relatives..rented a car there and drove up..going again this year probably on Friday..normally Veterans day...(they give out Caps for Vets)..reduction in tickets for vets also..looking forward to seeing other members

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Yes, any aircraft owner/pilot enthusiast should make a visit to Oshkosh. The flight Notam may be out already, or sign up at the EAA site to get mailed a paper copy. I live about 73 miles away, so I fly in every year.

My favorite activities is research on whatever is of interest at the time, avionics, components, whatever. That calls for time in the 4 large commercial hangars. I also enjoy some of the forums, maintenance, safety, general interest, etc..

If flying from a ways away, as posted, look into a Mackinac Island visit.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Looks like the planets are aligning for an OSHKOSH visit this year. If weather cooperates will fly in Sunday mid-afternoon and depart on Thursday AM.

North 40 camping, N-1383J...please stop by if you're in the neighborhood!

Roger, John Wright (james dub)/his bride and my wife and I will be arriving Monday and staying until Thursday morning which we will then continue north to Thunder Bay Ontario Canada for a few days etc. before we start working our way back south to Alabama. We will look you up once we get to Oshkosh and hang out with you for a little while.

Mike, we're RVing it too this year. We'll be arriving Thursday and staying at Camp Scholler. We'll have to get together for a couple drinks and talk Commanders.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I'll be there Monday for sure, maybe a bit more on either side.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Beth and I plan to make the trip up from Florida this year. A lot longer flight than all the years coming from MD. We plan to be there by Sunday or Monday staying through until Thursday. Thursday is the 100th Anniversary of Coast Guard Aviation and I'd like to stay to see that.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Gang,

I'm planning on flying in on Thursday and leaving Sunday (plus or minus 1 day for weather). Not camping.

You can email me at plight@Rogers.com.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I've heard from a Utah pilot who has contacts in the OSH area that there may be some additional constraints with on-field camping this year. Allegedly there have been some "improvement" projects to the North 40 that are running behind schedule and may not be complete in time.

That seems unlikely but I thought I'd pass it on in case anyone else is hearing similar comments.
