NOTAM: Warning: flight of two (Bama) AC11's headed North . . .

Todd Harding and I will depart Monday morning (25th) for an early afternoon OSH arrival. We'll depart Thursday morning still headed North looking at exploring MN before spending a few days in Canada flying around Lake Superior then down through MI.

Seeking advice on 'what to see / must see' in Northern MN, Lake Superior/Canada then MI.

Wife mentioned something about a big store in MN, bah, I'm thinking Wentworth Air Salvage should be a good vacation spot.

Appreciate any ideas, or advice on Canadian flying.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

The Apostle Islands, just a ways east of Duluth/Superior, are beautiful. there is one runway there and you can have lunch. Coming further east, the Keweenau Peninsula is just gorgeous to fly around the whole perimeter. You can stop in Houghton County Airport and go into either Houghton or Hancock for the famous Yooper Pasties. Still coming East, Marquette has become a cool town with great sports activities and a surprising variety of restaurants, best in the UP.

Then keep following the Superior shore to the Petroglyphs. You can fly that low and slow and it is really beautiful. Just pull back the throttle and prop and make things quiet and folks will wave nicely. Don't do a barnstormer routine there. The just follow the coast around to the Soo. That area with the locks is nice and interesting. Now come down to Mackinac Island. Best to avoid the weekend if possible. You can park and easy walk to town where you can rent bikes and arrange to leave them at the airport. Or horse taxis are everywhere.

From there, Fly over the Mackinac Bridge, then out the Waugoshance point ant around the shore of lake Michigan, by Cross Village, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, etc. Traverse City is busy in the summer with 17 microbreweries (at my last count) and great food. Cool Place. I really like the throw-back atmosphere of Beaver Island for a stopover out in Lake Michigan. Then you can fly across to a nice grass runway at Washington Island, Wisconsin, and have lunch there. Then fly the Door Peninsula down to Green Bay. Very easy to fly the entire trip in reverse.

Northern Minnesota, well, it is pretty, but flat with a ton of small lakes, except for Mille Lacs Lakes which is huge, famous for Walleye and having to put up stoplights in the winter on the ice. Cool Place.

that should keep you busy? Feel free to email me to scott@truen.com if I can help you with any details.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Scott,
Exactly what I was hoping for, I can see already I'd need much more time to do that area justice.

Thank you very much!
John

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Scott thanks for the trip tips...very seriously doubt we'll have enough time to hit everything you've mentioned but we'll plan to hit a great many of them.

Thanks again,

Re: Oshkosh 2016

To shorten it ... skip Minnesota and heat almost straight North to the Keweenau, just dial in KCMX. Fly the entire peninsula low and slow off shore a bit, then come back down by Marquette and past Pictured Rock. You just half to fly the Superior Shore. If you need to cut more, skip the Soo and spend the night either on Mackinac or Beaver Island ... or you could come on down to Traverse City.

I think I forgot ... you have to do the same low and slow around the Leelanau Peninsula when you leave Traverse City, or just cut across from Petoskey, then along the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, voted Most Beautiful Spot in America last year by Good Morning America. Well, I could name Ten competing spots for that title, but it is deserving to be there. Just fantastic.

If you left early, you could fly that entire route in a day. If rushed, I'd consider flying the shorter route I described down to KTVC, (nice airport, ILS, etc.) then head out there early, fly Leelanau and the Dunes the on down the Lake Michigan shore as far as you can then break off and head home. You could get home in a day from TVC doing that, no \problem. So two days total from KOSH.

My oldest and I always go to OSH, but I may need some minor but important surgery in then week or two and may not make it this year.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I will be RV-ing it all week in camp schooler! If any real campers that flew in, need a vehicle to go into town or just get away for a day. All are more than welcome to use my car. Also if anyone wants to meet up early in the week, before Scott's tailgate extravaganza, let me know! Text is best 954-465-7857
Mike

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Ditto for me. I'll be RV'ing in Camp Scholler as well, and will have an extended cab pickup that can haul stuff if needed. Also be happy to run folks into town for shopping, etc. Text is best for me also: 214 four nine eight 96 three nine.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Wish I could make it up there this year guys, but just have too much going on. :(

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Gang

Heading in on Thursday July 28th (possibly leaving on Wednesday if WX suggests an earlier departure). Staying at the University. Got an air conditioned room.

Where and when is the tailgate party? My email is PLIGHT@ROGERS.COM

Yeah and the bad thing is we (John & I) had you a bedroom already awaiting you & your wife's arrival:D:cool:
It sounds like to me you need to flip-flop your plans and come right on up to Osh Monday for a nice comfy bed Monday night:)

Re: Oshkosh 2016

As much I 'LUV 'Oshkosh, and I mean Flying in, Camping with /Living out of the Plane, the Displays, the Vendors, the Tech, This year with the Door Cam issue yet not fully resolved, and finally getting to a multitude of Storm & weather damage (house) repairs; and,Annual due Aug 1st; I have to admit it would be irresponsible of me to take the trip to Oshkosh given the finsncials involved.
Priority is continuing with the repairs&upgrades and see you all in Georgia! Sid knows my details.

Scott-my thoughts with you !

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Brenda and I are already here at camp scholler. Parked with the boxers at the corner of cottonwood and 24th. Stop by and say hello if you get a chance.

Looks like a bit of rain this afternoon.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Been looking for Commanders on the field at Oshkosh but no luck so far. 1383J is on the north end of Row 527, North40. Would hate to think it's the only 112/114, etc on the field

Roger, John Wright (jamesdub) and I are here but had to land at Fond du lac due to Oshkosh not having enough room for GA parking. Private message me with your cell number and we'll call you tomorrow so we can get together with you. We also so another Commander here at Fond de lac registered to a Mr. Riengold. I'm not sure when what day all the others are arriving.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

Sid flew in yesterday.

Re: Oshkosh 2016

I ended up at FLD yesterday, GAP at Oshkosh was full in the morning. I saw the word before takeoff, then listened up to see if FISKE approach was letting the non-camping planes in. Once I heard approach say no room for just parking, only camping, I settled up with the idea of Fondy.

It worked well, parked & bussed up. The weather was great, lots of attendees, had a great time.
