I am starting my journey to replace my sold Bo. I never thought about Commanders until Gary from another board reminded me that they exist. So, I am here to learn and ask dumb questions.

Saying hi!

Rule #1 - Always Check Here first
Rule #2 - Always Check Here first - ESPECIALLY When someone is telling you something "expensive" or that sounds "odd"
Rule #3 - Don't Forget ... Rule #1 & Rule #2

I did #3 a few times and wasted time, money, and increased down time as a result ....

But then again, I've always been a Hard-way ....Slow ... Learner ...against my preference!

It's AMAZING the wealth of information out here and the knowledge level of the commander owners!!!

Welcome!

Phil

"Gentlemen this is a football"

Let's start with the basics - Commanders are powered by Lycoming engines.

Let's get this out of the way - yes they are slower than a Bonanza. But....

1. They were designed for full size pilots and not midgets (nothing wrong with being a midget though). You can fly the airplane without touching your co-pilot. This is very important in this day of social distancing.
2. They are powered by a Lycoming engine - that really is worth getting one all by itself. IO-360 or IO-540. Does it get any better than those two engines?
3. They have a pilot's side door.
4. You CAN get parts.
5. They are easy to fly and even easier to land (trailing link MLG - way overengineered to boot).
6. They look good.

Good to see you checking out the Commander. There are a few of us BAC members that passed on the next step Sierra for a Commander.

Hopefully you can meet up with a member close to your location and get a hands on look at one of these beautiful aircraft.

Brilliant summary Stephen! Factual and to the point demonstrating the goodness of the Commander.

I would elaborate on Stephen’s reason # 5)
The gear makes every landing look good-it lies to you every time!
I haven’t flown a Bonanza yet but I still admire them.
I would like to hear your take on ownership of one.

Thanks everyone. The Bo was huge money(maintenance and getting it up to standards), and selling it was both a relief and painful. So I am taking my next purchase slow and making sure I dont repeat my mistakes.

I like space over speed, so thats why the Cardinal, Sierra and Commander on my radar. The 182 would work too, but I like gear goes up and gear goes down a lot.
I am not petite, and I like not cramming passengers into a small metal tube, so another win for space.

I take 4-5 longer trips a year, so I wont say no to a io-540 up front. But gotta figure out what that means and what to look for when shopping.

I am familiar with 177's, 182's, Sierra's. never looked at Commanders, so I dont know what I dont know yet.

Long post short, thanks everyone, and I am researching like crazy.

I had originally planned to fly to Chicago this AM and would have been happy to take you up and let you fly her, but plans had to change. What is your home airport?

I'm a KLOT if you'd like to see a 112. It's not flying at the moment but I hope to remedy that this week.

I’m at Burlington, WI, should you ever come up this way.
