New Shimmy Dampners

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

In addition to the other things that can cause the shimmy(see Lawrence's comments) - rebuild your current damper. Pretty easy to do. We are all interested in new ones since some of the originals are 30+ years old and have been rebuilt many times.

I am starting to experience a growing shimmy. I would definitely take one as well. What do I do in the meantime? What is the best way to address this problem?

Thanks,

Andy

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Andy

Before going to the expense of changing your Shimmy Dampner there are some other things that will cause shimmy which re not related.

I had a severe shimmy develop last year which was caused by a combination of a worn and overinflated nose tyre and a loose torque link on the nose gear.

New tyre and a torque link rebuild kit cured it for about £150 ($240)

Worth checking, especially the tyre pressure.

Good point, Lawrence. Overinflation of the Nose Gear tire (tyre!) is not unusual. I recall at least 2 other instances posted here where just getting the pressure right cured the shimmy. Nice when life is that simple.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

I need a new shimmy dampner....

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Thanks for your help! I'll try the torque link and air pressure first. I think all my tires are a little low..

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Does anyone know where do get the bushings for the scissors upper and lower bolts?

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

My understanding is they are very common and I had mine changed but I do not remember where they came from. I will look for the invoice and if I can find I will post the info.
I also had the bushings replaced in the nose pin and my AP/IA had no trouble getting them.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

That can't be Gary. Welcome back. Missed our GLCOG get together. Say hello to Karen.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

We definitely need a GLCOG get together. We have a bunch of new guys, too.

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Thanks fellas!

Scott,
6RC is down for annual for at least 2 weeks. Hopefully the wx will improve by then. I lost all of my COG email contact information a few weeks ago when my computer crashed, so we'll have to post any future GLCOG gathering on the webboard.

Later,
gm

Re: New Shimmy Dampners

Hi Byrne,

Sorry, not in May.

Given the time and $ sink of the elevator situation, I probably won't have the dampners engineered and approved till late this year.

If the Cape is not set up to do a thorough rebuild of your old one, have them pull and send it to me, $250. Also. your nose gear should be checked for any loose joints that may be the root cause.

Jim
