Hi all.

Looking for some advice on routes/final airports for 2 trips:

LOU to New Orleans
LOU to Saginaw or Big Bear dunes or the UP in general

Thanks all

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Jason,

We going to see you in Tenn Saturday??

My wife squeezed five adult ladies into a Ford Escape for a NaOrlons run. No sooner than they arrived I got the call, 'Can you fly two of us back in a few days'. I used KNEW, painless - easy access - no fees for a quick turnaround.
I'd use a direct route to NEW and probably stop at 23M for some of that $3.29 fuel.

UP - are you tracking the COG MI fly-in in June?

If I were going today I'd look at direct GLR (threading a couple Restricted areas) direct PLN direct ERY then KSAW.

Have fun!!

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Thanks John.

I was hoping to come down to TN but my son is coming to town along with other relatives for a visit. I am going to have to pass unfortunately.

The COG in MI sounds fun but I have to play a festival performance in Knox that weekend.

BUT...it gave me some good ideas for airports :)

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

I may see if my son wants to fly down with me for a quick in and out and just to meet some of you.

Winds suck today but hopefully they will calm a bit as it is not a long trip down there from me.

Jason

Some of my favorites in MI are: Traverse City, Charlevoix and Mackinaw Island. Mackinaw doesn't really open up until May but it is a great spot.

Hope it helps.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Not a lot of choices in the NOLA area outside of the bravo field. KNEW is the only one in the city.

More importantly, what do you wanna eat when you get there? I have a long list from years ago that I sent to someone, I'll see if I can find it.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Oh, mind the fog forecasts this time of year. There are days that no one lands at KNEW until lunch time due to zero vis conditions...

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

KNEW) approach took me out over the bay for sequencing - at first a bit unnerving but I think the average depth is only 3' or so . . . (what I've been told anyway)

Friendly FBO staff and ATC.

Thanks.

I am assuming you mean the lake?

KAPS (1L0?) also looks interesting.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Lake Pontchartrain, just looked it up average depth is 10 to 12' (waterwings??)

Thanks.

It's shallow but rough, you would be in trouble if you ditched in it.

NFL linebacker and his girlfriend fell off of jet skis and drowned out there just a few years ago, within sight of the shore but couldn't make it due to the tide movement.

I mean, you may be a Roman Gladiator and therefore tougher than an NFL linebacker so disregard if so, but assuming that's not the case... don't ditch in the lake ;).

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Lived in New Orleans all my life. Based at KNEW since 1963. rarely ever had a problem getting in or out. In the unlikely event fog becomes an issue there are maybe a dozen or so airports in the area to divert to. If you contact me when you plan to come this way l may be able to help you with hangar space while you are here.
Average Lake depth is 6ft and a lot easier to deal with than 50ft trees.
come enjoy the area....
BTW we swim in the lake all summer current never a problem except at the intercoastal waterway on rise and falling tide.

Besides--
Naaawleans approach always bring you in about 1500 msl. Gliding to shore isn't going to be an option. Always amusing how they start hinting for you to call the airport as soon as you are "feet wet". Can't even see the other side in the haze but they want you to call it. k

Thanks Jay. That is kind of you.

I love NO. Been there many a times. Just there last year for French Q Fest. We stay at the Frenchmen Hotel. I prefer that side of things to Bourbon St.

I will let you know. I want to try and make it before it gets ridiculously hot. I used to dig that heat. Not so much now.

I will be in touch when I plan that trip. KNEW seems just the ticket.

Feet wet?
The point crossing Lake Pontchartrain where an engine failure will result in you getting your feet wet. At 1500 msl (about the same agl) it isn't very far from shore. k

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

In MI one of the main places to visit is Machinac Island. Others nearby could be the Traverse City area, then maybe Beaver Island.

In the U.P. I like KOGM, nice airport, light traffic. I'm usually visiting, so it depends on your plans. KSAW is fine in the Marquette area, though a bit out of town. There are some smaller airports, which may be O.K., depending no on load.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

No fuel on Mackinac Island but beautiful as stated. Lots of mist and fog this time of year. Just to the west right across the water from the island is Mackinac County (83D) with fuel. Traverse City (TVC) is fantastic also as stated, and the AVFlight FBO has excellent service and facilities.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

Thanks all.

Interesting factoid...my great grandfather was mayor of Mackinaw lol.

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

What a coincidence Jason! I imagine that the weather is a lot better in Louisville than in Mackinac.
