New Orleans and Upper MI

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

That is very cool about your Grandpa being mayor of Mackinac ... Island or City?

I am up that way all the time. People have covered it fairly well, but in the UP, Marquette has become a really neat place, often voted a Top 10 place to live and best kept secret (KSAW). Also KCMX Houghton/Hancock on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Fantastic area. Much to do. Spend a day or two driving out to the point and other places. Very dramatic. Great hiking as well. West of Marquette, Pictured Rocks National Seashore is fantastic. You can fly into pretty good grass strips at Munising on the West end and Grand Marais on the East end. But not sure if you can rent a car anywhere. Neither have an FBO, per se. If grass strips aren't your thing, fly into SAW and rent a car.

Sault Ste Marie, "The Soo" is a cool area, too. Fly into CIU or ANJ. From there flying up toward Wawa in Canada for a quick trip, no landing if you don't want to do customs, or Land and clear and fly around Lake Superior. Amazing area. The Fiords look like Norway.

They covered Mackinac Island, a favorite, Beaver Island, very cool place. From a Traverse City Base the Leelanau Peninsula is a great area to explore. Tons of Wineries, and famous for cherries, apples, etc. Great area for foodies. Also Charlevoix has a nice airport almost in town. Harbor Springs airport is right between Petoskey and Harbor Springs Airport. The Tunnel of Treas road up to Cross Village is a family favorite ... probably for most every family who has ever driven it. email me if you want any more specific advice. scott@truen.com

Re: New Orleans and Upper MI

What a coincidence Jason! I imagine that the weather is a lot better in Louisville than in Mackinac.
Perhaps now...certainly not at other times :)

Island on your first question. My G ma and G Father was married at the Grand in the 30's. Used to have pics of it. Pretty neat to see it back then.

Yeah, my folks/most of my family are from MI. Parents are from Detroit and Flint. Met in Charlevoix. Rest is history.

I have spent a lot of time in the UP. Lots of King Salmon and Walleye fishing.

It is a stunning state and I missed some really good opportunities to buy lake property when MI further collapsed 10 years ago. Just didn't have the funds. Lake MI cabins were 50% of what they were in years past.

You are right...Lake Superior is breathtaking. For those that have not seen it...it is truly a wonder and the cliffs are like another country/world

Same for me with the lake property ... but being in the housing industry, I got killed right along with the housing crash.
