MT Propeller

Re: MT Propeller

Retail for Prop and Spinner $12,500. Governor $1,800, but I plan to sell them for much less than that to Hot Shot owners. If you want one for your straight 112, call me and we'll work out some COG pricing.

MT Propeller update:

The EASA STC's have been granted for both the 112/112B's and all model 114's. FAA STC's to follow soon.

Hi Carl,

I just received this email ... do you think it will expedite the approval of the MT prop for us here in the US?

U.S. Inks New Agreements with Canada, EASA
On September 15, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) signed agreements with two international regulatory partners, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Transport Canada (TCCA) that allow the authorities to rely on each other’s regulatory systems. The agreements will eliminate duplicate processes, get safety enhancing equipment installed on aircraft more quickly, and save time and money for both industry and the regulatory authorities involved.

Strong partnerships are a key to consistent safety standards around the world. Based on more than a decade of FAA cooperation with EASA and over fifteen years with TCCA, the agencies have established confidence in each other’s regulatory systems. Rooted in that confidence, the new safety agreements allow reciprocal acceptance of the majority of Technical Standard Order (TSO)-approved articles. This change benefits U.S., Canadian, and European aerospace industries organizations by eliminating the need for applications, additional validation and administrative review by each party.

The new agreement with EASA also facilitates acceptance of the classification for basic Supplemental Type Certificates (STC’s). An audit process will ensure that technical classifications continue to meet established criteria, and make sure standards are being met.

I Bob,

I read that and passed it along to MT. They said it probably wont help us much at this point because nothing will change fast enough for our timeline. Might help on other projects in the future though.

Re: MT Propeller

With the McCauley that is used on the 114 there is only around a 7lb weight savings, so there is not that much weight advantage, but it is quieter and with the scimitar design, of course, looks cooler:-)

MT made a mistake translating kg to lbs. They notified me today and corrected their figures. It turns out that the MT for the 114 is actually over 20lbs lighter than the 3 blade McCauley, around 1lbs lighter than the 2 blade Hartzell. Good for those of you that want to fly your airplanes inside the CG envelope.

Re: MT Propeller

The FAA has completed their review and will be granting the STC within a couple of weeks!

This is a huge leap forward for the fleet. Nearly a 30lbs increase in useful load for the 112's, and a better CG envelope for all of us.

Its likely that some good used 3 blade Hartzell propellers will come available for the 112TC/TCA owners that are still flying with their 2 blade propellers as well.

It takes 6-8 weeks for delivery, so if anyone wants to order their propeller now it will be legal to install by the time it arrives. By mid summer I plan to have a couple in stock, so people wont have to wait, but for now they are advance order parts.

The 10% COG discount of course applies but I'm also working on some kind of additional early bird special for those that want one right away.

If interested please call me directly, or email me @:

Re: MT Propeller

MT informed me this morning the they have been awarded the STC's!

The STC's cover the following: 112/A/112B/112HS/114/114A/114B/114TC/114HS.

I went back and looked at my email, I made initial contact with MT in April of 2012. It has been a long road.

I want to say thank you to everyone that has supported me. I know most of you are not going to be propeller customers for me, but I want to say thank you to you anyway, because so many of you have supported me in other ways, either by purchasing other products, or by offering me encouragement. I also want to give a special thanks to Bill Helsabeck for offering 1094J for test flying the 112, Judi Anderson for introducing me to Bill, and Finn Anderson for his surprise, and very welcome, involvement with his 114TC.

Whether I were to buy one or not, the wide (and widening) availability of parts and options benefits us all. I appreciate all you do to support us!

Re: MT Propeller

Congrats Carl!!

Re: MT Propeller

Congratulations Carl!

Re: MT Propeller

Congratulations Carl and sincerely thank you. Like many of your products, this is very useful to many of us. I know 18W is going to need one.

Re: MT Propeller

Carl, this is GREAT! now what is the trade in factor of a slightly used Hartsell Scimitar???

Re: MT Propeller

Congrats on the STC approval. Kinda bummed that there's no 112TC option (for the same CG weight issues already mentioned). I'll just keep truckin' with my two blade. 😊

Hi Ray,

Thanks, the TC's are a tough one because they didn't get the useful load increase like the TCA's. With a TCA the Hartzell 3 blade is a clear choice, because they aren't punished as much by the loss of useful load. But, with a turbocharged airplane you should still consider the 3 blade Hartzell. The two blade just doesn't have enough blade area to perform well at high altitude.

Re: MT Propeller

Just installed the mt-propeller yesterday. Thanks Carl.... a long time coming, but totally worth it. The takeoff performance is quite improved (could it just be the 30# useful load recovered?) and cruise is a bit faster. It seems to get on the step just a bit better. I wear the Bose A20 headset, so I can't say if its quieter or not.

Looks good too. It certainly matches MY paintjob !

Indeed Bill. you and 94J look awesome now!

Re: MT Propeller

Are you able to quantify "quite improved" by chance? Thanks.

You know, nothing is as different as night and day, but it did feel "peppier" rolling down the runway. The same for the cruise performance. It "felt" a bit better. I've only had the one takeoff with it, but am anticipating my next flight to see if I can confirm my feelings.

If you have a 112, the 30# you get back going from the Hartzell is the bigger deal.

Re: MT Propeller

After a few months flying with the MT on my 112 all I can say is, "What a Joy!"

It's so smooth and quiet I can practically fly without a headset. Being 30lbs lighter is great for useful load, but also gives you almost instant throttle response, so makes the approach to landing much easier to control and much more precise.

Re: MT Propeller

I've had my MT prop for about 10 hrs now and these are my observations;
1. It is extremely quiet, unbelievable deference and THE first thing you notice.
2. There's no real "spool up" with this prop. Push the throttle forward and it goes.
3. Better climb out at least 100-150 fpm but remember I fly from very high elevation ARPTs with density altitude 8-10,000 + ft.
4. My high altitude cruise seems a few knts better. And tremendously smooth.
5. It's a pretty big speed break up there, ( I know we don't need speed breaks) but it is so very responsive, one must be careful not to pull out power unless you need to pull out the power. It will surprise you how fast it will react to power adjustments. Don't ask me how I know this but trust me it is lively.
I'd post some pictures but I don't have a Flickr acct. You could go to my FB page but never mind.
Love the HotShot and MT prop combo. Thanks Carl.
