112sj is back in the air after about 10 years rebuilding it!! Last week my 112's gear won't lift. My mechanic and I have torn into it. There is power at the breaker, the gear relays, but not at the motor or squat switch. the wiring on my diagram for my 1973 112 serial #38 shows a logic relay? We can't find it and its not in the parts book? I've spoken with several ai's and they've never heard of a logic relay? Does anyone know of this relay or its location. Thanks Chase

You are talking to A&P and IAs, You need to be talking to the Commander Owners group.

Start off by joining the group if you have already not done this. Post your aircraft type and serial number in your signature.

There is lots of help available right here.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken, stop using your iPad ! His s/n and type are in his ID !!!

Chase, the logic relay is on the firewall in the engine compartment. Open your cowl cover and you will see it just to the right of the voltage regulator.

My C112 is serial 27 and I can assure you it exists and you need an AI that is familiar with the gear control circuit in the Commander or that can read and trace a schematic. The logic relay is part of the control to turn the gear pump OFF once the gear are retracted.

It is item 12 on page 188 of the parts manual.

Schematic is on page 10-22 of the maintenance manual for our serial numbers located in the centre near the top.

How can there be power at the relays ( I assume you mean the gear control relays behind the battery box ? ) and not the motor ? If this is the case, when the plane is on jacks do the motor control relays click in when you select GEAR UP ?

There is a gear troubleshooting guide in the HANGAR section that is extremely useful so start with that, a copy of the parts guide and the maintenance manual and your AI should be able to figure out the deal.

Regards, Tony

Chase; did you just purchase the plane? there may be a lot more to look into on N112SJ, S/N38. my file
shows out-of-service since 2002/ in a salvage yard 01-02. Are you going thru an official annual now?

Re: I"m new!Hi

The plane was bought from insurance in 04, the rebuild and airworthy was completed 9 months ago. Tony was correct, I found the logic relay on the firewall, its faulty. Great job!! To get the relay off there is 2 bolts, but the nuts behind it on the firewall are loose! A second guy had to climb under the dash to hold the nuts to remove the relay. Very difficult to remove it! Happy flying.

Chase:

Nice to see a good bird rescued from the wreckers yard!

You will find a number of items bolted to the firewall that require either 8 foot long arms with two elbows in each, or a friend.

Nonsense. Put a Vise Grip on one side, tie wrap (or just wedge) the handle against some other unmovable item. Then use a more appropriate wrench on the other side to loosen/tighten the bolt.

;)

Hi Chase, Glad to see there is another Commander in MN. I just bought a 114 and it's based at Fleming. We should try to met up somewhere when (or if) the weather ever clears...

The vice grip is the ticket.

And when you replace something like that aweful bolt going through the firewall like I did for the stall and gear horns bolted the same, use a longer bolt through the firewall in the opposite direction (Hex on bolt in engine compartment), then use one nut inside the cockpit firewall to lock the bolt in place, then install the device the stall horn in my case to bolt locked in place and then put another nut on to hold it in place.

I call it double nutting and you won't have to go through the agrivation they way they were installed from the factory.

I got the relay. It was hard to find! Thanks all.

Re: I"m new!Hi

Hi Chase, I hope nobody else needs a logic relay in the future. That place we both purchased it from seemed to have the last two on the planet.... Last year I came THIS close to buying a spare for my shelf but figured if I got 42 years out of the first one that the new one would be good. Glad you got SJ back on the line !

Re: I"m new!Hi

Do I have to do anything to winterize it? Such as blocking the oil cooler? I've done nothing this winter.

Re: I"m new!Hi

Re: I"m new!Hi

tape over the wire vents on the wings and the overhead vent in the tail, I would block instrument small vents, and when it is very cold, 15' or below I put a phorus sponge in the oil cooler vent. Also please be aware of shock cooling when coming in to land.
Congratulations on what must be a very gratifying accomplishment!
