HS Fuel Injector needed...And fast too!

I have been informed that I have a bad fuel injector. My shop is concerned that it is perhaps an aftermarket injector (rather than a standard IO-360 injector). They tell me it is two pieces with a steel internal. Can any Hot Shot owner tell me what is the proper injector for this engine? We just left Robin a message and are awaiting a return call but I am trying to get this thing fixed for an afternoon trip.

Mark,

If memory serves, a "real" hot shot injector is an RCM special. A number of us have changed those out for turboGAMIjectors. But I doubt you would be able to source either this afternoon.

Define "shot". It is pretty hard to break a fuel injector.

Re: HS Fuel Injector needed...And fast too!

Thanks Neal,

Shot is as in fuel does not flow properly through this injector. We have cleaned it and it is still restricting flow. We have looked at fuel pressure going to each injector and it is similar across the board. That leaves the injector nozzle as the problem. Was getting crazy reading on my cylinder 2 with very high egt readings and slightly low cht readings. We moved the injector to #4 and now the problem is on number 4.

FYI for those that may be in my same situation at some time, the factory injectors are retained for the Hot Shot installation. I found my RCM parts and installation manual. Bad part is that there are not any available locally and I will need to wait until Monday to get my plane together.

Negative. Factory injectors are modified for the installation (addition of upper deck reference).

Injectors have no moving parts.. so it is unlikely that it "broke". Take the injector apart. Clean it. Rinse it. Take it to your favorite jeweler. Have them run it through the ultrasonic cleaner on the highest setting they have. Reinstall and try again.

Thanks Neal. Sven said to drill it out and advised that there were changes made to the factory injector also.

Re: HS Fuel Injector needed...And fast too!

Drill it out was an extreme but to clean it is all you can do. Look further up the line for lack of flow me thinks.
It's too simple.

Re: HS Fuel Injector needed...And fast too!

Mark,

What is the AP using to clean it? Stoddard ain't always the right answer. A good soak in Hoppe's gun cleaner will take out almost anything that isn't a small pebble. (but protect yourself... it's a pretty potent solvent and #9 can be more challenging to find)) There are some other aggressive solvents and Neal's ultrasonic option is another good one. Air gun to reverse blast (gun to discharge side of the nozzle) might also be worthwhile.
