Also noticed a TFR over Gaylord. Looks like an airshow, Wings over North MI. Pretty decent line-up of performers . . .

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Detroit Approach is an incredibly friendly, helpful team, but try to traverse the area without a transponder andwell, don't be surprsed if they are not as fiendly. They will still be helpful. The country border lines are will-marked on all maps. the border goes right down the middle of the river. Not too hard to figure that out. If you are IFR, they take you over Canadian airspace all the time. Routinel If you are VFR and on a flight plan, you can fly over Canada at will pretty much as long as you do NOT land. You land, then you have a problem.

Having said all of that, I have flown over Canadian airspace on VFR days on Flight following and no one ever says a word. But I guess the best advice is to not do that unless you are on a VFR Flight Plan. Unfortunately I cannot go on this trip. I planned the first Great Lakes Fly-In about 10 years ago, and we had a great time. What we did then was I filed a VFR plan for a "group of 8" or 9. Unfortunately, the instructions on our "group up" were pretty much ignored by a couple of guys and I got the dreaded, "Call this jnumber after landing." Fortunately, when I called they just gave me a lecture and that was that.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Thanks Scott,

Sorry to hear you can't make this years gathering.

I obviously feel a bit 'distant', 650 miles south, Is this a go no matter of the weather event? (bring your raincoat / umbrella ) OR will someone make a wx call prior? From my flt planner map there is a big green cloud over MI at the moment, realize we have a few more days but looks like a 'chance' or rain throughout the weekend.

and mentioned earlier ref the peak season for lodging we'll need to make a decision probably by tomorrow afternoon per the reservations.

appreciate any thoughts,
thanks, John

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Lots of storms in the south this weekend John. KY and TN is going to be hit hard I think. I have to cancel my flight to play a show in Knoxville on Sat due to weather that evening and later Sunday.

Have to now drive :(

FYI

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

I have been watching the weather forecast and I have concerns about thunderstorms. Weather in the Great Lakes is hard to predict because conditions can change very quickly. The decision to make a flight only needs to be done just before the departure so that you can evaluate both current conditions and the forecast. For the group’s best interest, I need to give you some notice that, right now, I am not planning to make the flights for the Great Lakes Fly In Weekend. This decision does not say the trip is unsafe or that you should not go to the islands. There can easily be open blocks of time where the weather is fine or it can completely skirt the area of the flight. I am making the decision now so that I do not surprise everyone at the last minute. If the forecast improves, I will re-evaluate the decision. The stops on this trip are tourist locations and they do not need special guidance to get around. If you decide to make the trip, you will be treated right at all of the destinations. With any luck, the forecast will improve after I post this.

Thanks Pat,

Given I fly an all weather freedom fighter  I don't think I should put the wife through a few 'white knuckles' squall lines if I can help from it.

I still plan on 'busting' one of your local luncheons before its all over ;). . .

Best, John and Connie

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Sorry to hear Murph. I know how frustrating it can be to spend months planning an event and have WX screw it up at the last minute.
I hope it clears for you.
