Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

We are 6 weeks from the Great Lakes Fly In. The details are in the first posting.
This is a flying and social event, no formal seminars and you can come and go on your schedule. Many members showed up on Mackinaw Island on Saturday at the last Great Lakes FlyIn.
I have not heard of anyone can getting a reduced rate for hotels. The hotels that I talked to wanted a minimum of a 2 night stay for a block of rooms.
Please post or PM me if there are any changes to the original poll. We will have many ways to contact each other as we get closer to the event.
Scott. Politics has been your main thrust. First to talk politics even when no one else is talking about it. What has changed?

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Hi Pat sorry to interject a political note - is Port Clinton named for Bill or Hillary?

Just want to know, if so I refuse to pay any landing fees there.

Just wanted to let you know & avoid embarrassing you on the spot in real time!

Sid
That is a very good question. It was established in 1828 so I do not think it was a Bill or Hillary. It's nick name is "Walleye Capital of the World" if that makes a difference.
I have landed there and I did not get charged.
It is a GA friendly airport.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

We are 1 month from the Great Lakes Fly In.
Betty and her sisters have been at Mackinac and Traverse City since Thursday to check things out. Their weather now has not been good for VFR but everything else is great.
Many very good restaurants.
I will make a complete report when they get back.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Regret that I cannot make the trip due to business and personal commitments. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

PIREP
Betty is back from Mackinaw and Traverse City. It was a girls only trip. They spent one night in Mac. and was able to check out the sights and restaurants. You can not go wrong in Mackinaw.
They spent 2 nights in Traverse. There has been a lot done in the city to expand their tourist industry. Betty has a list of restaurants to choose from when we get there, no problem finding good bars. They did a 2 hours night cruise to see the stars away from the lights. They had such a good time they talked the captain into extending the trip another hour.
When we get closer to the trip we may decide to stay Sunday night also. Rooms on Sunday are easy to get.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

I was checking out some of the area airport stops (websites) on this trip and found a really cool video on this link http://www.portclintonairport.com/local-travel.htm

After link opens just scroll to the bottom of page and watch the video of the dog flying thru the airplane while driver pulls some negative G's, to funny.

Gave me a quick glimpse of John Wright (Jamesdub) while doing his PNP flights:D:eek:

On my first 'dog' run I actually got busted by my 'dog' recruiter pilot. I started what I considered a 'comfortable' rate of descent to home field and was reminded to watch the descent rate for the pup's ears were far more sensitive to ours . . . ooops . .

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

If you decide to stay Sunday, there are some great flying options or fly out places when you leave.
Beaver Island - 2 airports - we stayed there on the last GL fly in.
Drummond Island
Bois Blanc Island
Many other very nice airports on the main land. But I count the island airports special

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

I should add: The girls saw the Northern Lights on the cruise.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

This this still on ?? I am going to try and make it, weather permitting Steve

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Yes We are on.
Next week I will post some more information on time and locations where we can meet.
Because everyone's schedule will be a little different, we will have ways to communicate. Phone and air to air

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

We are close to the fly in. Attached is the itinerary and additional information about the airports.
Watch the weather very close. Use FAA weather and a weather channel. The weather in the great lakes can change quickly and the Weather Channel has not been very accurate. All the stops on the agenda are resort locations and there is a lot to do in all points. If the weather is poor in the either area we can spend the more time in the other location.
There is a separate pole for attendees arrival on another thread.

This is the post with the target arrival times for each location. It is an attachment so it is easy copy or print.
A second thread was needed to have another poll.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Does anyone know/recall the FAR's regarding flight over Lake Michigan,Erie etc.?
Are we required to have vests, life raft, etc.? I once heard of a guy who would
fly 50 feet off the deck over lake Mich., figuring if he had to ditch he was a "gonner"
anyway! Do any of you fly over the Great Lakes regularly?

Part 91 private flying you do not have to carry anything, it's totally up to you if you want a raft or vest. There's no rule for private flying.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Both islands are about 5 miles from the shore. I carry vest when I travel medium distance from shore (Catalina) but not going to these islands. I fly high enough to get to either shore. I know of several pilots that have ditched in the water, do not put your gear down. I have a friend that ditched a new King Air in the Atlantic. He put it in next to a freighter and was on board in 20 minutes. He had a all the equipment and a raft. The other was a Mooney on the way to Catalina. He was showing off to a passenger and he was so low the prop caught a wave.

We can all have different thoughts, nothing wrong with that. I do take issue with someone 'throwing in the towel' when it comes to overwater flying. I'd rather fly on the high side. Depending on winds and lake width, one can cut the 'no go option' portion to 15+/- minutes at 11.5 or so(Lake MI).

Most will survive a ditching in a light aircraft, downing and hypothermia are the killers. With 'VIPs' onboard I mostly go around the long overwater stretches of water, taking a bite or two on the corners as appropriate. With just me, I'm more likely to go GPS direct.

Often there is a ship or two in the middle of the lake.

Re: Great Lakes Fly In 2017

Doing a little 'pre' pre-flight planning.

Any plans on negotiating Detroit's B? We going to depart as a flight or file individually and 'meet-up' at 3W2?

'If' we wanted to go east of Detroit any special airspace concerns with Canada?

Anyone know if Detroit has a preferred STAR for that sector?

I think Todd got hungup there last year about this time with an inop txpdr and from what I hear Detroit was not that hospitable.
