As a part of this year's fly-in we are planning a "fly-out" on Thursday, September 29th, to Ken Andrew's Grand Oaks Airfield.

It's about 73 NM from KPIM and the coordinates are ... 31.725, -84.311944 or 31° 43' 30", -84° 18' 42.9978"

Ken has also volunteered to host a BBQ while we are there and we are trying to get a head count.

Nothing is set in stone, does not have to be BBQ. One local delicacy is Possum Pie, the pastry made with proper lard, none of this healthy stuff.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

I've flown a couple low passes over the Plantation. Very accessible approach and departure routes, could be a potential crosswind break as you descend below the 50' tree line. Flew off Ken's wing and he stopped on a dime, plenty of room. Ken - what is the length of N / S grass strip?

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Bob-a Big Thanks for your role in coordinating this Very Special, will be Historical event for with Ken (for all of COG)!!

Count the 2 of us in 2HT in. Already have programmed 'KP' as a custom Waypoint in my GPS's. However, per our conversations last year, will need a few chicken (hopefully -Seriously,non-GMO fed) sans sauce.

Also Just curious if there is a 'Georgia Pecan Brisket' that competes with the Famous Dave's (Loose) Texas Brisket? Maybe a contest should be informally organized!!! KP -IS- only 4.3 nm from PECAN VOR after all!

I have held off this question but I must ask.
Ken
Can you do a BBQ without a beer? Or do we need a designated driver?

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Pat- Remember we learned, properly distributed, that a Commander could hold 3 adults, 49 gal Av fuel, three 23#Clothing bags +188# comprehensive Glaamping Gear, including the Kitchen Table/Sink & Initial Water Supply for a week of Camping at Oshkosh.

Maybe the solution to your Beer question is do the BBQ Wednesday and negotiate with Ken a Grands Oaks Plantation Commander Flightline Overnight 'Lonnie Camping Party'! No designated Pilots needed till Thursday PM To return to PIM!

Sweet Tea is nearly as intoxicating and perfectly legal...

Sweet Tea is nearly as intoxicating and perfectly legal...

Alan, Georgia PEACH 50/50 Sweet or sans Sugar Unsweet Tea would be Great for us, but for these Characters?

Guess I should mention 2 for 91W. Will finally get to show Tracie that "yes an airplane can land on grass" She'll be surprised just how soft and smooth it is compared to asphalt or concrete. Unsweetened tea is ok for us. I'm sure we can catch up back at the lodge, although it will probably be a challenge with Lonnie in the group. :D

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Ken,

I was looking for the "probably yes - if the weather cooperates" option in the poll - decided Maybe was my best answer. Weather being friendly to a VFR kinda guy - I am trying to figure out the legs from Colorado and timing with work but - plan to be there - My 114 on grass, new people to meet, other Commanders to drool over, and southern hospitality - what more could one want????

Questions:
1) Will you have enough ramp space at Grand Oaks International? - or should we look to plane pool?
2) What are the approximate runway dimensions?
3) Do you need us to bring ______ to contribute to the cause? - as this is a huge undertaking and growing

Thanks

Dean

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Have parking space for 846 aircraft. We are in the large tent business so we can provide tie downs for at least 1000 aircraft.

Runway 18-36 is 4600' by 100' wide. clear safety zones each side additional 75' so you have a total of 250' wide. by 4600 long. More info later.

For those who may wish to partake in a malt beverage and support the farmers overnight accommodation is available.

Local motel rooms would save $100.00 over Calloway, then fly in Fri am
Plenty of camping space with pool shower etc.

Open to any and all ideas. I will take care of all the food and details. We have a brewery right here in town so beer is no problem.

As aviators we all know that plans may have to change according to weather.

Life is a barrel of fun.

Ken.

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Ken,

It's nice to hear that Grand Oak International Airfield has adequate ramp space and the runway sounds peachy! As long as the weather is friendly 42W and myself will be there - and probably RON as I think it's only fair to sample the local beverages for the full flavor of local hospitality. :-))

Thank you for the invitation, I am really looking forward to it!

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

With this Tropical Storm Colin crossing Florida / Gulf-JAX---to Atlantic O, anyone else wondering if Ken's GOP airstrip is getting 'a soaking '?

Looks like right now big TRW crossing JAX, but Dawson & Albany just 700broken 2300 ovc MVFR.

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Ken,

I am on a reservation/confirmation roll today and figure I had better continue with Grand Oaks. Weather permitting - change my maybe to a yes. My plans are to arrive on Thursday RON and leave for KPMI on Friday. Any suggestions for lodging nearby?

Thanks

Dean

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Ken - do you have an identifier yet or still GPS coordinates ?

Re: Grand Oaks Airfield Fly-Out...

Ken,

What is the radial and distance from Albany VOR?

Wx permitting, Todd Harding and I may hop over to 16J for Breakfast Sat.
