Fredericksburg fly-in events

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

Brian,

Heres a route I use if I need to go south through the rockies. I admit though Im a chicken about going direct over big hills so I try to find wide valleys (reduces turbulence too) with a decent place to land at all times. Its just a plot on the chart but I do alot of turning and route changes as I go once I see the terrain ahead of me but youll get the idea. This route also has some fairly decent fuel prices for stops. Once you get out around Scottsbluff its all open from there depending on which way youre going.

Have fun. Wish i could go. Next year I hope

Maybe we could have a 3 ship trip with Frank then you can see three together :)

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

Was just looking at the weather, and if you can get within 1000 nm of T82, it looks like nothing but smooth sailing!

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

Thanks Tim, that is real close to one of my options only I turned southeast by salt lake. Then south and under the rocks. We are going to Carson City NV the way things are at the moment.

Up date we rolled today for Carson gusting to 25 on take off not a big deal 10 degrees off runway heading climbing south 50 knt cross wind and moderate turbulence forecast for route. The higher we got the rougher it got by the time we made 5,000 we were getting huge waves and high altitude wind shear. It was not good.... the atmosphere was not happy about that nasty storm that pasted our region last night that's way we waited till 1pm to roll. First time I have seen this you have your usual chop getting tossed every which way then wham pulls the rug out from under you and you start dropping 1000 ft a min in a full power climb. We turned around 20 minutes out and back to the hanger for tomorrow. No way Im putting our ship through that for 4 hours not to mention Wendy's eyes as big as silver dollars.

Tomorrows forecast looks good finally! Isobars spreading out wind backing off turbulent's should be light. I should have listen to the briefer (your going to get thrashed I would do that in a small plane) but had to see for myself.

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

Tim -- that is the route I would take also with a small change. Although there is nothing wrong with going to Pocatello-(go around some rocks) I would go to Logan for fuel and then I would fuel at Laramie.

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

Sounds like a good call Brian. Wx is looking better for tomorrow. Wish I could join you.

Never fueled at Logan or Laramie Frank. When I flew mine back from SC last fall, I stopped at York, NE, Torrington, Ft BRidger, WY and Gooding ID for fuel just mainly because of fuel prices and good routes with passes. I was going to go to Kemmerer WY but the winds were about a 45 degree crosswind at 35kt and that would have been my 8th landing in my new plane and I wasnt going to ball it up over 15 cent difference in gas :)

Re: Fredericksburg fly-in events

I've been to all but 3 Commander fly-ins since '97, and never a better place than T82. '08 was the best we've ever been to, all so private and close-in. can't wait..
