We plan on departing California on June 20 weather permitting. Must arrive Sky Acres Airport by June 25. So, some time in between. If weather is good all the way, we would land on the 22nd or 23rd. If not, we will wait it out where ever in the U.S. and land by 25th latest. Should be a nice trip. I can try to post while enroute for a firm arrival date.

To ALL ... You will all notice that this really helps everyone. These planes were built very differently and depending on your type, year and serial number some advice applies and some does not. Also helps to know where everyone is, because many members have parts, good machanics, places to stay, ability to ferry you if you get stuck away from home, etc. etc.

Thought you'd appreciate my experience at airport security. I landed at Sumburgh in the Shetland Islands for fuel. We parked the Commander right outside the security area and the staff shepherded us in to do the paperwork. I had my backpack with docs and toiletries, the usual. So we went and had some food and returned. The same staff met us and insisted we go through the full security checks. I had to open my bag. The shaving gel container and other stuff exceeded the 150ml that's allowed for carry-on baggage. One person started to pack my toothpaste into a clear plastic bag. They then started to debate about whether I would be permitted to carry the stuff back onto the plane. The whole issue disappeared when I pointed out that even the bags on a four seat light aircraft were going to be hold baggage. Hold baggage ! Inspired. And we were just about to walk through when I got called back. I needed to take my trainers off so that they could go through the security scanner......

OK, I do have some blond hair ... my mom is blond with blue eyes, but what the heck in the world is "trainers?" I've heard of trainer bras but trainers for guys? I'm lost here. Help!!! LOL silly.

Hey, reason we are flying to NY from CA to go to Ireland is to AVOID those morons at TSA. I could spend about $200 to get from here to there, but why, when we can jump in the Commander and enjoy the view, stop at some cool airports along the way and eat good food.

Rob, like me, is Scottish and in Scotland your "Trainers" are training shoes, training as in physical training or "Sneakers". When I lived in NY they used the "Triainers" word too. What do you call them in CA?

On the other hand, being brought up in Glasgow on a diet of Fried Mars Bars, Donner Kebabs and anything cooked in Lard. I do indeed need a training bra if I go running :D.

I just HAVE to know ... do they really have Fried Mars Bars? Battered & deep-fried twinkies were all the rage in the south some years ago.

Yes Scott we certainly do have deep fried battered Mars bars, I'll give a longer outline of Scottish delicacies on my blog page when I get home later.

I eat about anything ... but I could die a happy man if I never had a deep-fried Mars Bar. (Hey Gary! I did have an elephant ear tenderloin at the Indy 500 2 weeks ago and of course thought of you. I tried to offere a bite to my son Conor and his gal-pal but the disrespectfully declined. We gots-ta-git-back to Mattoon someday! You know, an elephant ear tenderloing dipped in chocolate might be good?)

Speaking of Scottish delicacies, Lawrence, a client recently sent me a bottle of Scotch as a thank you for helping make his conference a success. On the label it says, "Macallan 25." Suppose that's any good? Might go great with a nice plate of Haggis.

hmmm... let me weigh the two. Which would I rather devour? Haggis vs Fried Mars Bar? Haggis? Fried Mars Bar? hmmm... better just pass the Lagavulin. ;-)

PS Scott... Macallan 25 is a very nice thank you. Drink on special occasions. (like surviving another day in the RE markets.)

Yeah, my eyes bugged out when I saw that Macallan 25. It's about $600 per bottle! I have only had a couple of drinks of the stuff in my life. I drink Macallan 12 a lot, and now and then a Macallan 18, which is superb. The 25 is other-worldly. VERY special occasions! (and I don't think even Macallan 25 could make haggis appealing!)

I'll be flying into Detroit for the Commander BIG PARTY. Never been in Detroit so I'll prob arrive Thursday and look around and I'd really appreciate a lift!!!

Okay! I grew up in Brewster NY and we called them sneakers there. In California they call them tennis. When I first came to CA I had never heard anyone call sneakers tennis or running shoes. WTF@ck.

And, fried Mars bars? OMG that is disgusting. I never seen fried pickles until the OKC fly-in. I had to take a picture of that!

Hey, I will bring a few bags of chicharones to the fly-in for you since you like lard. The best chicharones I encountered were in Alabama.

I have been around the world several times and try to eat the local fare as best I can. Absolute worst was curried unidentified wild animal tripe in Iryan Jaya. Cook tried to describe the animal in pidgeon english but all I could figure out was it was killed in the jungle. Enjoyed the tree fungus soup in Malaysia. Some wierd foods in West Africa whose names I cannot recall or pronounce and would rather not try again. Now I live in New Orleans, one of the culinary capitals of the world and still find interesting things to eat. Try alligator tail sauce piquant some time, not so bad.

So my wife is from New Orleans and thought the best thing she ate in Scotland was haggis. Great with tatties and neeps but she liked it better for breakfast sliced and fried served with eggs, baked beans, fried bread and black pudding (blood sausage).

Fried Mars Bars 'aint so bad after all.

Scott, enjoy the MacAllen. Sure beats the Kava I enjoyed in the South Pacific islands. That is made by natives chewing a local root, spitting out and letting the saliva ferment. When offered on a half coconut shell by the local tribal chief, it is considered very rude to refuse. Yum. Quite potent too once you get past the ghastly taste.

Rob! I was going to go up Tuesday to lead some Island tours. Any chance you can get there earlier? One way or the other, we will get you there. If we were to come back sunday morning, I could show you around the Detroit Area Sunday/ Monday.

I believe that I can assist also. I am flying a load limited 112 though. I can fit my wife and myself one other adult and enough fuel to make the trip with some light bags. Let me know. I believe that my reservations are Thursday through Sunday.

Mark ... if you had to to make it work ... one day UPS & cheap for a box to the Petoskey area. I would have no problem bringing him back.
