Scott (Galaxy Quest???)I can make it on Tuesday. Should i bring some choice whisky? I spend some time in the local universities and we get a choice between 'known' meat and 'unknown' meat the students eat anything that's put in front of them. How about rattle snake fritters in Death Valley? Or raw kelp straight out of the water off Seattle? But the worst ever was in Austria. Fat balls floating in oily gruel with hints of coloured micro-diced vegetables. That had me heaving. Susie, we call running shoes trainers from training shoes. The old people used to call them 'Gutties' in these parts. don't ask me why. But culture has moved on again and depending on your rap, garage, techno or urban preferences they could be called anything and I'd be none the wiser. Ian. We took the Commander onto the Fair Isle at the week-end. That's like landing on a carrier. It was really something else. Rob PS Might make Booker at the weekend Laurence.

Wonder if the "Gutties" arose from the gutta percha latex compund that was used for golf balls (long ago) and closely resembled the soles used on older tennis/gym/trainer shoes. Might have been used for certain soles as far as that goes. (remembering Converse All Stars of the 60's)

Bill you got it in one! We used to call elastic bands and also elastic catapults 'gutties' for the same reason.

Ian, that brings back memories of long ago, whilst a student, of using surgical tubing to launch water balloons o'er top of multiple University dormitories and thereby staging surprise, but "refreshing", mortar attacks on nubile coeds sunbathing on the quad. Scott will surely recall such adventures. What rascals we were...

OHMIGOD ... Bill and I went to the same university a year apart and shared many experiences. Bill, you recall the upper porch of the FIJI house I am sure. It has columns on the rounded portion (still the same today.) We used to rig up the surgical tubing wiith a spaghetti collander and shoot water ballons straight down slant walk and Friday afternoons. A lot of fun until we hit a girl, I still recall her name, Robin Hammerman (beautiful & bitchy) and she filed a complaint. That required a big meeting with Dean Lykens and some house "commmunity service" work. Fun while it lasted and no one got hurt. (maybe just lucky.)

2. Choice Whiskey is ALWAYS welcome. I am guessing the Mac 25 will be gone by then.
3. Where I grew up, in the 50's we called everything "Keds" because the big brand was U.S. Keds (kind of like Kleenex or Xerox.) In the 60's we called all types of sneakers "Tennis Shoes" no matter what they were. Now I call everything "Running Shoes."

If you get in Tuesday we can run right up to Boyne. I think I am going to stay at a condo 5 miles away and you could stay there with me -- it has 2 Bedrooms but if you want to be at the hotel itself I certainly understand. If you need to come Wed or Thurs though, no worries ... we have a tone of planes coming from the South and east that will pass over or near Detroit and can get you a ride. From the East, many do not want to pass over Canada due to the new 406 ELT requirement. Fly into Detroit Metro KDTW and you take a $10 cab ride to Av Center East at Willow Run (KYIP) which is 7 miles from DTW. One of our members will land there, pick you up, and right on their way. Easy.

I recall it well. Well, good to know it wasn't the first, nor the last, meeting our beloved FIJI's had w/ school administration. (or our "perhaps more dignified" Beta bretheren across the street for that matter)... ;-)

Rob,do you have your flight into DTW? Going up Tuesday is perfect. You can also fly the island-tours with me if your are interested. Go to google map satellite view (or one of the others and look at Beaver Island, Mackinaw Island, Drummond Island (all Michigan.) Also look at pictured rocks national lakeshore on the south shore of Lake Suprior -- stunning. We have some great flying to do. Might even consider Washington Island, Wisconsin. (Regarding the sleepover, don't worry, Karen Miesch is coming with Gary and she keeps him in line. If he's alone, though, you have to make sure you have a lock on your bedroom!)

Hey Bill ... what a nice destination you have here in NY. Slimmmmmm runway. For westcoasters, as slim as Harris Ranch. Beautiful barn. My Commander is tucked away in a hangar. We slid in before the weather or should I say above and below the weather. I had a huge smile when ATC said "624BB contact New York Approach."

I must say, everywhere we landed, they handed us keys to their cars, even a cadillac. The nicest people are found at airports.

Bill, thanks for the tip on the airport of choice. Lovely place.

Welcome aboard Susie. I'm glad you are settled in.

BTW, you should have seen the runway before they upgraded it 5-7 years ago...21' wide and, ahem, uneven. It is a palace now compared to a cow pasture earlier. Clearly you left coasters are spoiled.

(Sven, we should make Susie fly into Stanton!! )

Bill, I can almost see the cows on the runway! The barn is beautiful. We leave to Ireland in the morning and gone for some time. We may go wash the plane today and enjoy the hills of the airport.

I think you'll be gone by then, but I believe a couple is getting married at the airport this Saturday or Sunday. They belong to a North East Pilots Group and met at a fly-in.

Hills, Cows, Pastures, and now Wedding Bells too...

Way cool. I love airport weddings! We had an airshow for a wedding, and got married a mile high in an AN-2 owned by Bob Cable at Cable Airport. We had more performers at our wedding than most airshows and nearly 1,000 guests. People are still talking about it.

We are now back in SoCal with many great memories from coast-to-coast and a great trip to Ireland. Just didn't like driving on the wrong side of the road. I said I rather fly in Ireland than drive. But, the drives were stunning. Visited New Castle Airport in Ireland and LOVED it! They want Rob to perform aerobatics there and was invited to fly a show. So, who knows, more trips to the emerald country.

On our way to NY, we landed at Youngstown Elser (http://airnav.com/airport/4G4) ... and OMG .... that was interesting with full fuel, lots of luggage and a very very warm day. Thank God I am married to an aerobatic pilot! That's all I can say. Lovely place ... fuel was hard to beat at $2.85 / gal and they handed us the keys to their Cadillac to get lunch in town.

I so recommend flying coast-to-coast. I have done it many times now and each time, it's a wonderful experience. And, not to mention, flying in the Commander is like riding in a Bentley. "Love my plane!"
