Commander Vs Airliner

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Suzie,

Do you have any more pictures of your paint scheme. Seems fairly traditional, but I love those silver wings.

Very distinguished looking.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

That photo was taken at the Shafter Airshow April or May of 2008. Can't remember .... I believe airshow before the crash.

I fell in love with that plane only cause it had it all and no time for projects at the time. And, best of all, it's the same color as my XKR.

And, BTW, speaking about AVOIDING TSA which stands for Total Sick Assh@les .... we are flying to NY in two weeks in the Commander and need a hangar for about two weeks. Anyone know of an airport in the greater NY area I can park it at? I will be close to my hometown Brewster, NY; or Holmes, NY. Even Danbury, CT would be OK. But, don't want to leave it outside. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Tx!

Susie

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

ISP has open hangars for rent as of now.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Susie,
I can check at Sky Acres as well, there may be shared hangar space available. It is about 40 mins from Brewster (I live in Carmel). Danbury used to have shared hangar space available when I was there, I can check there as well.
Will find out and advise.

Yeah, but with the new TSA regs Suzie would technically need to be escorted to/from the airplane. And she's looking to avoid the TSA. :)

44N or DXR, as per Bill H, would be a better choice. POU is an option too. That pretty much covers the area up there.

Frank is correct but this was just initiated June 1 and the TSA is sparse but present. So far not a big deal.
But... that's how they get in,Start small and grow like cancer.

Still annoying... "in the name of security" A delusion.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

I thought the TSA, yesterday, revised this new rule, so it's not so onerous.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

I heard the same thing Brad. Supposed to be eased for transient drivers. May take some time to work down the food chain.

The last I heard was that transients no longer need an escort as long as they stay near their airplane, or the FBO building. No wandering around.

In the case of the hangars at ISP, they are behind a locked gate and not near the FBO building. I'm thinking it would be easy to question someone in that area that wasn't displaying the new id badge.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Bill, thank you for the help. Being on the left coast is hard to know what the locals know on the right coast.

Carmel... I love Carmel. I grew up in Brewster. Still a beautiful place.

Is Stormville Airport still there? That is close to my sisters home in Holmes. Probably too small of an airport for the Commander.

Danbury, Dutchess, all OK. Thank you!!!!

And, I will have to deal with TSA at JFK but hopefully this time I won't get into a fight with them. They made me take my light jacket off. I told my husband, next time I am not wearing anything under my jacket!

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Yup, Stormville is still there, but it is closed for flea markets as much as it is open to traffic it seems.

I'll make some calls today, also going out to Sky Acres and will inquire there.

Will let you know.

I thought Stormville was only flea markets and carnivals now. I didn't think they allowed any airplane traffic any more. I'm pretty sure I've seen "X" on the runway.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Hmmmm, you may be right Frank, I haven't looked that closely. Thought I saw it temporarily Notam'd closed, but mebbe it was perm. Was a sh%thole anyway, chew your prop up with all the loose crap on the runway.

From Flying e-mag...(new rule guidance is just as clear as the first go round of this garbage!)

TSA Backs Off on Badge Requirement;
But Check Ahead, Anyway
Last Friday, the Transportation Security Administration enacted a new security directive, SD-8G. The new measure replaced one that was much more restrictive, and would have required transient pilots to undergo separate background checks and acquire security badges for every airport they might visit that also has commercial airline service. (Estimates place the number of such airports at around 400, but the TSA has not yet published a list, and the criteria have not yet been made known.) Under terms of SD-8G, which took effect on Monday, transient pilots need not acquire a badge, but are advised to remain close to their aircraft and leave its 'footprint' only for trips to and from the FBO. The TSA is expected to establish guidelines for self-fueling facilities and emergency situations. Pilots based at airports with airline service will still be required to undergo background checks and get security badges in order to walk unescorted around the airport—or areas of the airport designated as sensitive (no clear direction on those criteria yet, either). Airports can apply to TSA for an alternative security measure, which would enable them to forego the badge requirement. Pilots are advised to call ahead to airports they think might have airline service and assure themselves they are in compliance with the new TSA directive.

Last time I buzzed the prison and looked at Stormville it looked very closed.
Read for condos.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

I just looked Stormville up in AOPA and on DUATS. No NOTAMs for closure, although AOPA says it is closed on several weekends each year and to check NOTAMs.

Either way, I ain't going there. :D

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Susie,
Sky Acres has a T hangar open at the moment from a sudden vacancy. The airport owner says you are welcome to rent it during your stay. If it gets taken before you get here, she also has a big hangar with room available for Bravo Bravo. Says anyway you play it, you have space there.
I have not checked Danbury yet. I do know you would only have shared space there and I never heard good things about those spots in the 15 years I was tied down there.
Let me know if you want to pursue Sky Acres, I'll send the contact info for you to set up your stay.
Bill

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Bill, you are the best! I just spoke with Sky Acres and they are saving me a hangar(s). I love it! She told me she spoke with you and knew I was coming. My gosh .... doesn't get better than that. What a neat airport http://skyacresairport.com/

I love the fee too ... $10 a night. Amazing! Here in SoCal ... we have been charged $10 a night for parking outside at some local airports. So, this is fantastic! It seems like everything gets cheaper as we travel outside of CA.

BTW, I did call Dutchess and they do have a hangar for $21 a night, which is still great, but I love the atmosphere better at Sky Acres. Love the barn!

Stormville has a recording and I guess they concentrate on crap - meaning tag sale junk than open for airplanes. Their recorder has some flying info, but I am not interested in a chewed up runway. No thanks!

So, Sky Acres it is. What a cool place.

Re: Commander Vs Airliner

Excellent Susie, glad it worked out.

Let me know when you come in, I'll swing by to say hi. NECOGers get together frequently, so mebbe we can have a mini fly-in whilst you are here.

Looking forward to it.
