Started installation of my baggage door gas spring.

Anyone know what this sealer is that is in my baggage door jam? I've bit the bullet to take my interior side panel out today (even with 38-deg hangar conditions) and found this "hockey puck" sealer around the hinge bolts. Thankfully it's only on the nut-side of the stringer. It's hard enough that a putty knife won't pry it out.

Would it be the same sealer as the fuel tanks? k

Proseal 890 will do. It is probably more pliable when newer and warmer. I would use B-1/2 and probably put a heat lamp to help cure it in these temps. Careful not to cook the metal, keep it back a ways.

I got close to the screen and had a sniff. It smells like JB Weld. Looks like a die grinder job to me.

I'm guessing epoxy of some sort. Usually you'd only see that when something had broke and needed a quickie fix.

I've seen sealer in this area on some 114B's, but never on an earlier model like yours. I the 114B I saw it on it was soft - like silicone, so figured it could just be pealed off. Whoever did yours was not kind.

It's COLD in there & I've been distracted. Will make a run at it this wk. Thinking about a heat gun and big dose of patience. k

I think there are chemicals for that - I mean the goop - actually there are chemicals for the patience too!

Kelly,
One thing I have always used is a home made chisel made out of 3/8" plexiglass. Just put a 30-45 deg edge on it and however wide you need to get in there. The reason for plastic and not a putty knife is if you gouge the metal it creates a stress point for a future crack.
