Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Very sad pictures

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Wooooooooooooooow.
Sad day at black rock.
Bad when only metal remains.........and melted at that.

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

All I can say is WOW (as well). I could not imagine getting the call from the Airport to advise me that my Baby is now burnt to the ground. I have a buddy who's airplane (tied down) was hit by another airplane (distracted) pilot. The distracted pilot did not have the common courtesy to call the owner (after doing substantial damage to the bird). My buddy was not a happy camper when he got the call from the airport.

Just food for thought.

Tim

Thats unreal to see how bad the damage was and how little is left of a plane after a fire with the aluminum completely gone from the fire. Any news on the cause for the fire and explosions?

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Dear Tim,

While the situation is somber it is good to hear your beautiful Commander has been spared.

All the best,

Pete

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Thanks guys. No official word yet. I'll post it when I hear something official.

Guess I could start rumors and speculation but then I'd have to ruin it with facts later :)

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

With this attention getting post, and it being ‘Fire Protection Month’ in this area. Tomorrow’s trip to the hangar will center on inspecting and policing possible hazards. I couldn’t imagine that happening and I feel terrible for those poor owners!!

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Tim what's the status of the Camas fire aftermath - how many planes lost or damaged?
Any projections on cause yet?

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Hi Sid,

End result was 10 hangers lost and 8 airplanes.

The Fire Marshall and insurance investigators determined the fire started at an outlet mounted to one of the large beams but the occupant had a power strip plugged into the outlet and the strip was mounted on the beam next to the outlet. The heat damage was too bad for them to accurately determine if it was the outlet or the power strip.

We renters have a sense it was the outlet because those hangers were built in the 50's and not exactly top of the line install jobs. I was in one of those hangers for two years in the mid 2000's and was surprised by the cracking insulation and condition of the wiring back then.

I'm sure the Port will be coming up with all kinds of new rules for us anyway.

Any idea what they concluded for the explosion? I love when they always say "The heat damage was too bad for them to accurately determine" in reports.

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Paul,

No, nothing said about that. Theres alot of us that think they may not want to determine the actual source. It sounded like there was a lot of finger pointing by owners insurance company investigators and the port. Who knows, but it makes for some interesting conspiracy theories. Besides who, wants to ruin a good rumor with facts :)

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

No new rules at Pearson. Yet. We have 2 rows of wooden framed hangars the rest are all fairly new and metal with concrete block firewalls in the middle of each row of hangars.

There's a guy next to me ... we all thought he was seriously dead because he has cancer and no one has seen him for months. But he turned up last week! His hangar is crammed to the gills with junk including two old pickups that are buried. I was across from him in a standard "T" and the one next to him came up that has the extra room and I jumped on it. So he comes by Saturday morning and starts complaining that "You got my hangar!" Seriously. He said he was in line for it. I had no knowledge of that but he was bitching about it and I finally said, "Well, it might have helped your cause if you had an airplane." That really set him off and he started harping about "You pilots think you deserve special privileges!" Duh! I tried a crazy angle whereby I pointed out that this was an airport ... and everything about the place was set up for ... AIRPLANES! He was not impressed. Anyway, it really does worry me what he has in that hangar.

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

There is a guy two hangars away from where OM used to live before 'movin on up' where the guy is PAINTING airplanes. Now, if the hangar was actually equipped with the proper electrical equipment including explosion proof receptacles and ventilation it would not concern me however it is not. Stock wiring. I have walked by the place a few times last year when he had the door cracked open and got a buzz. One spark when he is painting and that whole row is going to heaven.

I am completely amazed if you are not getting overspray. We had a guy a row over recently who painted his plane in his hangar (he is real proud of it and it truly looks like crap, but no one has the heart to tell him) and even with my hangar door down and on the back side of the next row over, I and many others got fine overspray visible on windshields. Everyone is pretty pissed off about it.

My brother In-Law is attorney that works for a large insurance company and does multi million dollar lawsuits but not for aviation says, if you have something like this say 10 planes toast worth 100K each you might not want to push for the exact cause as it could be there client insured.

Reason being its cheaper for them to pay there client 100K for the loss, than find out it was truly there client that caused the fire and now paying for all the other losses which would be a million in this case, not counting the property loss which probably would add another 500 k to replace the hangers etc.

There should be a report out soon for the explosion cause I think, as its an easy test done in fire investigations to find what caused it, and the flammable source and guessed it was stored fuel.

I have seen over the years traveling to ap in my area on a good day taxiing around some open door hangers, and seen to often 55 gallon drums in hangers and if I was to guess its pilots using and bringing in there own mogas.

Scott,

If your airport has taken AIP funds (which they likely have), they are subject to AIP rules. One of those states that all airport facilities must be used for an aviation purpose. If you were to drop a dime to the AIP folks, they would in turn threaten to sue the airport unless that guy is removed.

There are apparently FAA lawyers who do nothing but this stuff. A hangar at my airport was repatriated in that manner.

Regards,
Neal

Probably doesn't have proper breathing air either. These paints are chemically nasty and you need the right booth and equipment to really work with them properly and safely.

I do some little pieces occasionally with the door wide open but nothing significant.

Scott, Overspray – same thing happened to me. Mentioned prior in another thread, go grab a (Mother’s Clay Bar) kit. Great at removing the overspray without damaging the glass. Highly recommend, great on other parts of the plane as well. Walmart / Autozone . . .

Re: Sad day at my airport - Camas WA

Thanks John. That is exactly what my mechanic's A&P apprentice "Missy" used. She works her tail off for me for $20/hour and always does more than I ask, so its a good deal for both of us!
