As I am new to this site I thought I would throw an Invite out to all and sundry to be involved in the outback air race here in Australia especially those located nearby.
For those that would like to pack there kit bag (gear up) and head down to australia from location far and wide I can assure you of a warm aussie welcome.
Just so you know what it is about and why, when
What
In this broad brown land of our we have a service called the RFDS (royal flying doctor service).
This service provides much required medical attention for those in remote locations in Australia basically for free.
I heard it quoted at a recent fund raiser that the RFDS has flown enough miles since its inception to go to the moon and back.
Hard to believe I know but even if it’s half true that a hell of a lot of air miles for sick Aussie’s
Why
I have seen the results of some of the work they have done including a pickup of one of my friends who need urgent medical attention after a car roll over in the north west of Australia some 1200 road mile from the nearest hospital facility.
Let me paint you a bit of a picture
It is dusk
My mate (friend for those of you who can’t understand Aussie) had a boomer (large Australian red kangaroo stands 6 ft tall weighs 200 to 300 kg) jump out on the road in front of him.
He swerved and got of on the gravel and the rest is rollover history.
Needless to say he needed hospital and quick had some fairly serious head trauma and was not in good shape.
RFDS to the rescue
It is now dark we are on the edge of the road with the landcruiser lights shining down the road into the wind.
We have a couple of torches (flashlights) on the edge of the road and I mean a couple and in comes this dash 10 and puts it down on the main highway.
Talk about gutsy.
They pull up and give my mate some overdue medical attention load him on to the gurney taxi back to the car turn into wind and they are gone.
Thanks to their bravery and fantastic pilot skill they basically gave my mate the opportunity to live.
I can say he is well and now married to his passenger with 1 child and one on the way.
So as you can see I am very grateful and am happy to give some of my time to try and raise funds for the RFDS.
For those that might be interested in this race I would personally love to see it turn into an international event.
The Event
The Outback Air Race started in 1996 as a concept created by the Fund Raising Section of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA Section). Essentially it is not a race, it is a time trial, which provides a considerable flying challenge, but is conducted in a safe and efficient manner, while stressing the importance of good airmanship. The aim of the Air Race is to raise funds for the RFDS and to provide an exciting and unique flying holiday for pilots from throughout Australia, New Zealand and overseas.
There is a heap of info available at http://www.outbackairrace.com.au
Would be fantastic for Australian commanders to join in and would welcome anyone who would like to either fly there machines to Australia (big ask and huge logistical problems) or fly cattle class (regular public transport) to Australia and simply dry hire a plane for the event.
I can assure you this will be a holiday that you will certainly remember and enjoy seeing some of the best Australia has to offer.
When
There is an event this year year leaving from Broome and traveling across the top of australia to Airlie beach. It does a lot of the top end of aussie with some fantastic destinations.
Check the website for dates.Due to the late arrival of my plane from NZ and the possibility that the thing would not have a new donk (engine)in it in time for the race I decided best to just see this one off from Broome
But next year I am definitely in.
For those that are interested in 2010 which is the one I will be going in please feel free to contact me by email mike@ebtide.com.au
Regards
Mick
