I am dropping of my oldest son in Lehighton, PA, just NW of Allentown, a week from Saturday, July 11. I have a gig in eastern OH on the next wednesday, so I thought I might just stay out east and visit some clients on the Philly area, possibly down toward Baltimore Washington or possibly toward NYC. Then come back through Pittsburg and visit another client, then on to OH. I will probably be freed up mid to late afternoon that Saturday, and am looking for ideas on something cool to do or a cool place to go for Sunday. Any suggestions?

Have never been to Rhinebeck, for example. Worth the trip? Or just some beach or Island to fly to? Or some last minute fly-in plan somewhere?

Re: Advice on east coast trip

Scott, I'm sure the New York crew (NECOG) will have plenty of ideas for you.

My advice would be the Statue of Liberty at night. Its a very nice leisurely trip and obviously can only be done on the east ccoast.

Fly up the Hudson river, you stay low (I think you need to be under 1000 feet) and you can cruise up one side of the river, and down the other (rules of the air are like those on the road - stay on the right side)

When you get to the statue, you can fly as close to her as you like (no restrictions that I know of)

Its a beautiful flight, I think you'll enjoy it. Too bad I'm not in town or I'd go with you...

Re: Advice on east coast trip

As Dave mentioned, Hudson River tour, I get cleared into the Bravo at 1500, much easier than trying to sneak in under the shelf. Beach, Ocean City, NJ, airport is 3/4 mile walk to beach with boardwalk. Air museum in Reading. AC if you are in to casinos (can easily be combined with Ocean City).

Re: Advice on east coast trip

Flying under the Bravo is much fun. 499' over the LI shore, cross the Verrazano Narrows bridge between the uprights, up and down the Hudson at 700', across the water to Sandy Hook at 1000'...can't beat it.

Rhinebeck is pretty cool, if not more than a little hokey. Walking about before/after the show is the most fun. Winds have to cooperate or they won't fly many of the original ships since the Aerodrome is a grass runway and not an airfield. Still great fun and worth the trip.

A bunch of the NECOGers should be around on the 12th as well, although a few of us will be in final prep chores for Alaska.

Re: Advice on east coast trip

I'm leaving on the 5th for the Right Coast. Have a few stops to make along the way, including CPAC. If all goes as planned, I may be in the Hamptons (KFOK) around the 12th.

Stop in at FOK SheltAir, Ask for Laura and the red carpet.
I'll pass this to her.

Thanx Sven. Can Laura beat the fuel price at Malloy? SheltAir is showing over a dollar per gallon more on AirNav than Malloy.

Thanx Sven. I'll do that.

Re: Advice on east coast trip

Scott: Ditto to all of the above. On a clear night down the Hudson is one of the Most spectacular sights your gonna see in an Airplane. Get yourself a TCA chart, study it, get the freq's to transmitt on. When you get to Downtown Manhatten Call LGA tower(Freq on chart) request an East River tour to the upper end of the Rosevelt Island. You can make a uturn at the tip pf the Island, Go all the way to the right before starting the turn(Don't pull a Cory Lidell) head back down south. 1000 feet generally keeps you clear of all the Helo traffic, and you're right at the bottom of the TCA. All VFR except the east river tour. Listen up for traffic and enjoy the tour...

Sven,

Looks like I'm gonna owe you a couple of beers at Boyne Mountain. Just got off the phone with Laura at SheltAir :).

Re: Advice on east coast trip

Hey Vince,

Any idea when you are going to be landing in Manhatten? The more advanced notice we can give Jacob the better.

Yikes

That hurts my brain to think that far in advance. Stopping there on my return home, so my best guess at the moment is around July 28th, give or take a day or so. I'll let you know as far in advance as I can, the date/time I'll be there.

Vince,

If you're planning on landing in Manhattan then I want to be there to see it happen. It'll be on all the local channels anyway, and probably national news too. The last guy that came close to doing it ended up in the Hudson (lucky for him).

You'll have to let us northeasterners know your itinerary. We should get together for lunch/dinner if you can squeeze us in. Maybe we'll invite Scott too, if he's in the neighborhood and promises not to embarass us.

:)

Frank,

Manhattan Regional (MHK) Kansas :). I think Carl was trying to get your attention. Fuel stop there on the way home at the end of July.

Should be getting into FOK around the 12th, for 2 or 3 days, then on to HYA for a week, and the following week at DXR.

My cell is 714 329-1200. Send me yours.
