A Great Time in Dayton

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

I sure would have been happier in Dayton than miserable in Ann Arbor.

The "Brady Bunch" is indeed in a sorry state right now.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

It was a great weekend, and it was fun to be there with my daughter, Reagan. She fell in love with the COG, and the LOCO, and left with a greater interest and determination to fly. Thank you to all who embraced her and made her feel welcome.

It was also a blessing. Reagan has been through a lot with my dad's decline over the past few years. She didn't need to be there to witness the end. Now she is free to keep the good memories she has of her grandfather.*bleep*

We toured the Air Force museum on Sunday. It was a great time together with Reagan, and a great tribute to my dad. He was an Air Force lieutenant during the Korean War, and during his lifetime saw many of the aeronautical advancements on display there. Being there was like taking a walk back through a part of his life.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

She is a very impressive young woman and great that she takes after her mother, Carl. Very poised for her age. My only concern is the influence that LOCO may have had over her. Counseling may be needed!

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

She's a sweet young lady Carl and the girls had fun with her. Glad y'all made it home and we will continue to keep you in our prayers.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

lol ... ain't that the North vs. South?
South "Sweet young lady."
North "Impressive young woman."

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Scott-Right, as long as we respect the BEST of both (All) cultures, we move Humanity forward.
.
Carl-Camellia and I agree with all previously stated. Your sharing about Reagan being able to dwell on the + is a very important psychological dimension of moving on. I must say, as Our event started on Rosh Hashannah, and we are approaching Yom Kippur that taking more 'than a few moments' to reflect, contemplate, and cherish the blessings of your father with the world that understands 'generation to generation' will help you, Reagan and your family move forward. I am sure all if COG will agree you father was Very Proud of you for many many endeavors.
As long as we remember/cherish, they are always with us!

Lonnie- remember what I shared!

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Carl, give Reagan a big hug from us. She is truly a strong young woman. You and Robin should be very proud of her. Although I know it was hard for her, I'm glad she was with us and that in some way the love we have for each other helped ease the hurt. Our prayers all with you all.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

That is awesome you all had a great time! I knew you would after last years adventure! I really had my heart set on going but just didn't work out this year. After last years adventure it was a hard call to stay grounded but it paid off. I did sell my home in 4 days for 20k more than asking it would have been a bit awkward to be in Ohio making decisions housing market is hot up here.
The new home should be finished within a week or so of my closing talk about timing.

In short I can't wait till next year I will be in a much better place to spread my wings! So glad most everyone is home shinny side up well except Tim. Don't feel bad Tim Last year I was two or three days after everyone was home. Its those damn Rockies brutal crossing even 1st October the windows gone. It is you, your experience, your technology and your ship against Mother Nature I hope your home now God Speed Tim!

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Hey Brian,

Thanks for thinking of us. Im not sure what the record is for longest flight home after a COG fly in is but we just got home today at 1 pm. Spent three days in Wayne NE, which was by pure luck one of four favorite stops. Too long of a story to tell on here but what an amazing town and people.

We covered almost 4,000 nm in 30.9 hours. We left two weeks ago tomorrow and in spite of numerous weather problems and two mechanical delays, we are finally home.

If anyone is interested here is our routing. Some weird ones due to deviations in ND/SD, WY, ID, and UT to try and get through the Rockies. Stayed over in Mandan ND; St Ignace MI; Mackinac Island MI; Dayton, OH; Wayne, NE; Gooding ID. Longest day- yesterday from Wayne NE to Gooding ID at about 1000 miles and 7.7 hours. Shortest day St Ignace to Mackinac Island - .2 hours and 5.5 miles :)

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Tim-quite the adventure! Think you & Vince were the longest distance Commanders this year . Over the Rockies -real Chutzpa! Curious what altitudes you crossed the Rockies. I remember one flight in a 737 to SLC that turbulence was so bad, baggage kept falling out if the overheads, You were smart to wait till conditions were better.

We enjoyed very much meeting and sharing common interests with you & Vikki. Thanks for making the commitment.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Brian, so which part of your plane are you spending that $20K "found money on?

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

That is a great trip, Tim. Just had to look at Wayne, NE on Wiki and Google Map and satellite. The odds of that being such a great town seem very remote ... but I too have found great towns in unlikely places. Would love to hear more about what made it special. Could be a good stopover for many.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Wayne NE was our first stop on the trip to Alaska. I worked that day and could not leave home until about 6:00pm. We had a great evening.

A couple of people have asked about getting a copy of Rob Harrison's handout from his Friday seminar. Copy attached.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Sweet trip thanks for posting the link Tim. It took us 4 days and 3 nights last year to make it home from T82. I crossed the rocks a similar route last year only coming up from the south we started in Pueblo CO to Salt Lake, then the same route out through Idaho. What an adventure flying these fine ships about the Country.

In the end when the co-workers are gathered around the water cooler talking about their weekend or vacation they have no idea what we just experienced. Something so awesome and adventuresome you just can't put it in to words.

Scott I will try to hide a roll of bills for SB but I think I created a monster on the new build a hungry one.

Glen

I heard Jim Richards had a good video on the landing gear system and troubleshooting and wondering if it could be posted too?

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Sherman,

We enjoyed meeting everyone too. We were at 9500 and 11500 for a good portion through MT heading out eastbound and made it westbound at 8,500 most the way. A lot of the flying westbound in WY and UT was less than 3000' agl so we varied between 8500 and 10000 or so, so not always at VFR cruising altitudes but that was because we were under 3000' AGL trying to get around showers and passes.

Cant wait till next year.

Re: A Great Time in Dayton

Scott,

Hard to put into words how Wayne ended up being such a great stop for us. When we landed we were not planning on staying because we wanted to get further west, but after talking to Jim who lives right by the fuel pumps, we decided to stay. He put us in a empty hanger for free and they had 5.00 fuel, but it wasn't why we stayed.

Turns out he and his wife had just moved in to a two story house right at the airport in Sept 2013 and two weeks later (one year ago exactly today), Wayne (along with several other towns) were hit with rare dual F4 tornados. He and his wife Sandy went to their basement and less than 5 minutes later one of the tornados hit the airport and totally wiped out everything except one row of old T hangers. He and his wife survived but their entire house and literally everything they owned were gone. The stories they told us of how complete strangers showed up the next day to help them search acres and acres of farm land to try and find anything they could of theirs were unreal.

They had retired and moved there to work at the airport. There was just something about meeting him and his genuine caring that we seemed to like. We ended up staying there for three days and used their courtesy car and went to the airport each day to just hang out and visit with them. We visited one of the other nearby towns (Pilger) that were devastated too. Very humbling experience. Absolutely everyone we met was warm and welcoming and friendly. Not at all what we are use to out this way.

I know Im not explaining this very well, but if you ever have a chance to go to Wayne and meet Jim and Sandy, you will see what I mean. We are planning a trip back there for a couple days to see them on our way to OKC.

Heres a link from the AOPA website about the damage there. There are two pictures that are hard to tell what they are, but its all thats left of their house and basement they were in during the tornado. The new airport is beautiful and was just "re-dedicated" yesterday in a ceremony.
