and who can forget the sep Robin Miley and Bob Cordray hgr sessions?

One plus of Fort Collins, is that it is right on the Front Range - which means good DA for NA aircraft but yet you are right at the edge of the Rockies for easy automobile trips into the mountains.

That area (Front Range around Denver) has experienced explosive growth over the past 10 years so I don't know about costs other than my time working there in the oil & gas industry. Commercial real estate costs got out of hand within a few short years. But there is definitely a lot to see and do in that area in September, with still very warm weather.

All true - but the last fly in there wasn't particularly exciting. The airport facilities to hold workshops were limited and there really wasn't much to do there.

Fort Collins did nicely solve the issue of our normal aspirated Commanders getting in and out. I had no trouble with my 112 but I declined the mountain flying experience after the class session we had, lol.

If we ever go back, I think an organized trip to BAS in Greely would be in order. A couple of us went through quickly but I'd love to spend more time there. BAS has become one of the largest salvage operators for Commanders in the country.

I'm sure there would be some other good fly-out options, too.

Fort Collings was outstanding and extremely well put together. I was there for those opportunities to talk to other Commander owners and the workshops. I can always do sightseeing but I cannot always be around a lot of Commander owners. The Hotel was outstanding as well as the lineup of the workshops. in fact, due to a couple of the workshops, additional items were added to my annual checklist.

One of the big benefits that Glenn pointed out you eastern folks are on the right side of the Rockies.

Hot Springs, AR it is! :D KHOT. Two nice runways. Great resort/spa type town. Wife's (and husbands) would love it as well. Great food, Horse Racing, a casino, plenty of lodging, and a national park to boot. And, it located in the middle of this great Country. Just sayin.......

Hot Springs would be great.

Hot Springs would be great.

I'd think that would be considered more middle of the country rather than western third of the country. Though, if you and Dustin were to volunteer to organize it, maybe it'll get up-voted.

Point. Next time we bring one to Michigan I'll volunteer!

Michigan would be a great spot. I went to an engineering conference many years ago at some resort on the Western shore of Michigan. Benton Harbor? It was a big white hotel. Really nice.

Palm Springs is a great place but you need to take out a second mortgage to afford the landing fees. Henderson sounds better and is easy to get to - unless you want to make it out to the beach and see the great Pacific Ocean.

I agree - I used to fly in and out of Henderson regularly on business and it's quite a nice airport. There's a restaurant and rental cars are available. There is an nice hotel / Casino not far from the airport

And certainly there's many other entertainment options in Vegas or at Lake Las Vegas. I don't know about availability of hanger space for doing tech clinics.

I have a plan in the hopper to fly to the Salt Lake area this Spring, April or so. I would come in from the North some, WY then west. Unless one wants to squeeze through a pass, the easier way through CO is south near Farmington, NM or North through Southern WY.

I’ve kept my schedule kinda clear with the younger Son home. He’ll likely be in the Coast Guard next Fall, which frees me up for more outings. I realize also Covid messed up a lot of things, hopefully in the dissipating stage now. Yes, likely the handful of factors choosing a suitable airport for the annual meet.

Joel - they recently built a new restaurant at Henderson. Does anyone know if they have an attached conference room? From a classroom point a view, that would solve the problem. From the point of demonstration - that is another subject.

If you're talking about the restaurant up on the second floor, I did not see any conference rooms when I was up there last. That doesn't mean that they don't exist I just didn't see them. If the fly-in was based at somewhere like the m resort then we could use their conference rooms for meetings and tech sessions. We usually look for an airport that has hanger spaces available so that we can also do tech sessions on a physical airplane that's pulled into the hangar. The other question with Henderson is whether or not they'll allow us on the ramp on Saturday in Mass. Last time I was there their security was getting pretty tight and if I remember correctly they wanted to escort me out to the airplane.

Thank you Joel - good points all! I have not been there in quite a while so I could not attest to anything only speculate.

I vote for Lake Havasu City, AZ. London Bridge, Colorado River, Casino, Reasonably priced, plenty of hotels, nice long runway and not to high 783’ elevation. Those wanting to fly to Palm Springs or Henderson can from there in 40 mins.

I suggest KMRY, Monterey California. It covers everything on Glenn's list previously posted.

Some highlights are:
- Golf coarse within walking distance
- Plenty of aircraft parking, two FBO's with hangars. Reasonable fuel prices.
- Resort hotels nearby (some on the water) big enough to hold our group.
- Casino's, shopping, the beach(!) all ridiculously close.
- Low DA, two runways, IFR approaches.

Thoughts?

Monterey is a great idea! They also have the Monterey Bay Aquarium there - pretty nice. And just a short hop north to Watsonville, they are planning to return "Fire In The Sky - Watsonville Airport Open House in September of this year. It used to be the Watsonville Antique Aircraft Fly-In and Airshow but, Covid shut it down from what I heard!

Folks,

The only negative I can think of for Monterey is that it is a commercial airport. I know Alaska flies out of there, so there has to be TSA. I say this because at Carlsbad (Palomar) due to some reginal jet connecting flights, the TSA is back. Unless you have a business jet and multiple wallets, the TSA has really screwed up the rest of general aviation...
