2022 Fly-In?

CO seems like a fine choice.

Any updates? I would love to get our schedule and overnight stops (Nashville or Memphis) locked in for September.

I only mention this because I am working on a get-away to Laurel MS for next week ( 2nd attempt) and watching weather might have us head north to Bar Harbor ME instead. My Bride does not like flying through the really bad weather so I'm planning for two totally different locations. Oh the joys of flight planning

Pete,

I live in Denver - so can probably be in place for a Friday afternoon/evening check in/ welcome wagon. Depending on schedules, I might be able to make Thursday work too. I've already had to commit a lot of my vacation time so I don't have too much flexibility this late in the year.

Seems like a fine location, easy for us ‘flatlanders’.

Seems like a fine location, easy for us ‘flatlanders’.

It is easy for everyone in the Eastern U.S. - even for 112 drivers.

I remember when we were at this same location in 2017 and I did day 2 of the trip - Dayton to FNL. I believe I was at 6500' and it was fun to watch the ground keep getting closer the further west I went. But all flat.

……and at 5000’ you’ll have plenty of throttle left.

It's also not bad for the folks on the west coast. If people aren't comfortable flying the passes/mountains - there are routes north and south that provide lower terrain to get east of the Rockies.

From this part of the country it's way more fun to fly up to Gunnison and then through monarch pass.

I’ll have to look up ‘Monarch Pass’, seems a place the bull elk would be hanging out.

Yes, the rockies can be troublesome. I fly from Pearson Filed (KVUO) to Ogden, UT (KOGD) for fuel (534 NM about 4hrs) I keep the freeway off my left wingtip most of the way, and will cut south of Laramie, WY to get to Fort Collins, CO. 400 NM about 3 hours). My flight will be about 900 NM.

If any one wants a mountain flying checkout before the event let me know. I am a CFI that used to be based in Colorado and have lots of experience in the passes and mountains there in a commander.

If I were closer to you, I'd take you up on that offer.

A few ways to go from Phoenix. Joel mention going through Gunnison and then through monarch pass. If I go, and the weather looks good and winds aloft are playing nice, I may get to high altitude and try that route. If not, I may cross the mountains a little south of Pueblo where there is an opening, and go up the front range.

Where are you based?

update: Ahh shoot Oklahoma... already on the other side of the hills from me.

Weather permitting I go direct from Cortez Colorado to Loveland Colorado at 17.5 Great views and a nice ride

Doug,

I flew that route this spring (KTCS - KCFO) - La Veta Pass is simple and has AWOS so you can get real time winds. Plus you have options a farther north if winds/weather aren't to your liking. Mosca Pass is very close to the north and farther north is Poncha Pass (near KANK) and that's an easy pass as well.

I always plan my routes, with a few options/outs and remain flexible so I can adjust to current conditions. When I went down to KTCS - I had planned to use La Veta Pass, but, it was packed full of clouds, so I went with a different route. You could also look at going to Grand Junction, then cutting across and using Rollins Pass west of KBJC.

Good luck with your planning!

Great information Dean. I'll take a look at those routes, and have backup options ready in the event of weather/winds.

Fort Collins sounds great. FWIW I flew from TLH to FUL in April. Stayed south through ELP, TUS, into the LA Basin through Banning CA. All good in my IO-390 112. I did get bumped around on a leg from ELP-AVQ. Decent mountain wave, had trouble maintaining 10,500 on a high DA morning. No problem at 8,500. Like others have said, I Follow Roads works well out west (I-10 pretty much the whole way from FL to CA) :-)

Yes that one section that you mentioned from El Paso over in Arizona - especially if it's later in the day is the one that I dread when I come back from the East Coast. Always hot always turbulent and even with the turbo it's pretty hard to get above it.
