2010 cog fly-in location

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Andrew ... go back to the beginning of the thread. We move it around each year. Next year back "toward the west." Having said that, when we have had it as far west as even Arizona, it was sparsely attended by folks from California. When we had it central, in Missouri and Texas, we only had one or two that did not come commercial. We need a certain critical mass in order to rent space for group dinners, presentations, etc. With the economy as it is, the Board believes that holding it in the far west would not draw nearly as many folks, although we will certainly consider that in the future. You can be sure that next year will be at least Central or perhaps West.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

We don't seem to be very well represented on the West.. What are the objectives of the COG fly-ins? Is it just a vacation, or a chance to meet as many of the members as possible at one meeting? I like that we have chosen centrally located sites in the past. I think this should be given the most weight. I would like to meet you guys, but NC or FL seem a stretch for me.. Thanks. Andy

Hi Andy. Perhaps an enterprising COG member of the West (hint hint) could put together a local fly-in for the Left-Coasters. The last time this was tried, I had hoped to get up-close and personal with a commander, but one-by-one the members dropped out until I was the only one that showed - In my Skyhawk!

Check out the threads under CA fly-in.

regards

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

My suggestion to the west coasters ... start a campaign EARLY next year. Pick a location that you think will draw, get a strong commitmentment (numbers, probably need at least 15-20) that will be there, and that will greatly increase the odds we can schedule one out your way. It's simple numbers and economics.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Can you guys decide a place and date before us west coasters all get dizzy reading all the posts?:)

I also belong to another group that has the training wheel in the back, that fly in, prs, and reno races will take up most of my time off.

Sounds like my brothers on the other side of the hill have been dropping the ball.
I guess I will have to see if I cant get a few talked into crossing the mountain this summer to one of our desert fly-In's.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

There's a good possibility that we will target an AZ, NM or CO location next year (unless the CPAC deal closes next year and supportive selection of MO becomes likely.) The general objective is to select locations that will draw as many planes as possible. That objective is seasoned w/ location amenities, seeing new places, etc. We strive to alternate the long haul years for all those not centrally sited.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Floyd ... it's the same dilemma. You shortchange the input period and people bitch. You extend the input period, people bitch. Right now we are getting it from both sides, so are probably just about in the right place. We opened it up to suggestions about 4 weeks ago. Started the poll for weeks about 2 days ago. We cannot lock in location without the week and vice versa. It will all come together in April and be announcedby May 1. You will have a full 5 months. Now seriuosly, how many totally volunteer groups give you that much notice! This is more work than most can imagine. I think we have done very well in past years.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

I know what your up against Scott I have put on a few over the years. From what I have read you guys are over the top for a fly-In.

Around here the locals just pick a day, bury a pig in the ground with three days prior of drinking and cutting wood to make 3 foot deep coals. Add about 200lbs of burlap wrapped beef roasts.

Then we have landing contests, flour drops, airplane bowling, and ribbon chase. Preceded and followed by aerobatics flybys and sometimes a barrel roll by a citation. Warbirds, cubs, and lots of bush planes and a few RVs.

This is followed by a night of fireworks drinking and lots of picking and grinning.
Its a bunch of 16R type folks so its not for everyone.

The next day we uncover the pit with the backhoe and there is food for all.
Then the process repeats itself

Unless you enjoy airplanes, guns, drinking, food and music it can be overwhelming and some flatlander's have called it down right dangerous.
It is, but we figure too much cake can kill ya. We ask everyone put there guns away once the drinking starts, and most of them do.

Floyd, Now that's a fly in I'd hop the mountains for. Let me know when you put together another one!

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Nuthin' wrong with food cooked in dirt and served by a backhoe!

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

A lot of different folks to be served, for sure. But I'd be at your hoedown in a heartbeat.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

To appease our more genteel attendees, perhaps you could take some of the heated dirt in the backhoe bucket and add water then convince the spa crowd it is a hot mud anti-toxin treatment...

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Always...

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Looks like another year of not attending the annual event because it is so far away - not since Sedona have you had the event anywhere close to the West. Maybe in 2011 ??

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Carol make another day of it and come on to the fly in. What so its another 3 or 6 hours havent you ever driven 8 or 10 hours before. Flying it will be a lot eaiser.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Carol .. .you need to rattle the hangars out there to get more support. When we went to Sedona it was still 90% folks from the Midwest, South and East! The sentiment is, yes, to go west next year, unless The really REALLY new Commander Aircraft takes hold and something major is happening in Cape Girardeau. But it takes a critical mass to pay for stuff. A good show of intent from the West Coasters come about November/December this year would help a lot.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Well Scott what is the decision, I've read all the posts but none say a definite location. There is a lot to be said for Manteo, NC but nothing saying "dis is the place"! Maybe I'm just out of touch.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Scott's room rate just went up.... cha ching

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Sept is better, End of season Stearman Fly-In at Jennings La. Is First weekend in Oct.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

9/24/10 is the best date but.................what ever ends up being the best decision will previal.

Re: 2010 cog fly-in location

Scott are you aware there is no fuel to be had at Jekyll Island, the nearest being St.Simons which itself isn't too shabby as a location. My 2 cents, all I can spare.
