Hello!
I'm a new forum member looking to purchase my first plane and after almost 2 years of research, I'm left with a commander (likely 112 TC) or a cirrus sr20. I'm still a baby pilot with less than 200 hours and I fly out of KVKX. I plan on keeping this plane until my 4 year old is too old (and heavy) to make the W&B.
The most critical shortcoming in my research is that I haven't had a chance to fly in a commander or even sit in one. So that's still on my list to do.
Everywhere I went, folks recommended I join this group and so here I am. I look forward to learning from you all and hopefully joining the owners group.

The 112TC is plenty of airplane for a growing family.
We're 4 - 2 adults 2 kids far far away from any W&B limitations. I 've had mine 22 yrs now ..

What's life like in the FRZ at Potomac ? I used to go to DCA before the SFRA. Now to Manassas KHEF and IAD every now and then ..


Happy to arrange a ride north of it ..

Welcome to the group. I bought mine without ever having seen it in person, sat in any type of Commander, much less flown in one. I live in Texas and I bought mine from a great COG member in Long Island NY. I flew up to Long Island, saw my Commander, did a walk around, filed my flight plan back to Texas, and took off. Within 2,000' AGL I realized that I had made one of the best airplane decisions in my life.

Now, I do not recommend buying an airplane like that. In fact, I doubt that I ever do it again, but my point was that research led me to the Commander and it worked out great for me.

Yes, when it comes to airplanes and cars I am a little bit impulsive and at times it has cost me plenty.

I bought mine without a ride in one but lots of research - so you can call it semi-impulsive. I knew i didn't want a high wing or a mooney. A Saratoga was the alternative but breaking the budget.

I narrowed down to a 112 Hotshot back in the day but Judi's seller was AWOL and never came through and i found a TC in trade a plane that looked pretty good except the price.

Turned out the seller bought a share in a twin baron and had this airplane just sitting now. Bargained down from $100K to $79K , did a pre-buy and stumbled into a fantastic bird that i ended up just keeping. No regrets. The only plane i have considered upgrading to over the years was a 114TC but wanted new only.
 
Yeah coming from a Beech Sundowner, I got very used to a pilot's side door.....once you have one you forever think that you are too good to crawl over a right seat to your seat ever again!
 
Jafnar: Where do you live? Someone near you has one and would be more then willing to show you around a Commander

Hi!
It's funny I've been lurking around your youtube channel watching your videos. That video with your son is one of the things I dream doing with mine! I learned to fly in the FRZ so I know nothing else. The only downside to me is I can't fly a drone (the software won't even allow it if I tried) but other than that it doesn't bother me. I am also one to prefer IFR flights now that I started working on my IR.

You're close enough that I may take you up on the ride offer if you don't mind. I so appreciate it!

You Sir, are braver than I! I did that once for a mustang years ago and I learned my lesson after selling it 6 months in (and my wife won't let me forget it either).

I'm in the DC area (southern MD). I should have added that. I would absolutely love to just sit in one, even on the ground. Flying in one would be more than I hope for at this point.

In the DC area we have a couple of TCs - in the Manassas area.

Alternately if you PM me, KESN (east of MD) or ILG (NE of MD) are reasonable non-FRZ options.

Additionally i am due taking the family to Dulles Air and Space in a couple of weeks.
Will likely just fly into IAD or HEF. Either way it's a car rental.
