MT Propeller

Re: MT Propeller

My daughter Reagan and I took a tour of the MT factory in Straubing Germany. They're doing great things for the Commander community. I'll be sharing some of what I learned while I was there at this year's fly-in.

Re: MT Propeller

That can't be Reagan! She only came up to your waist when I last saw her in Dayton. :D
Wow!

Re: MT Propeller

While Reagan and I were in Europe we spent some time in Guernsey. There are more Commanders based at the Guernsey airport than at any other single airport in the world.
Ironic that my Grandfather was born, in 1906, less than a mile from where Danzil and I are standing.

Re: MT Propeller

FlyASG are the folks at Guernsey. They're almost all 114Bs, but the engineering guys there are really knowledgeable and helpful - I've called them a number of times on the search for parts for G-NATT and their advice has always been freely given and spot on.

Re: MT Propeller

Very cool aircraft lifts. Great photos and thanks for sharing!

My prop is delaminating on the trailing edge. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

I've seen that once before but it was caused by an impact.

Wow, what does MT say about that?

They are not going to cover it under warranty... their reasoning is that it should have been fixed before it grew to such a large size. My problem is that at the point I first discovered the crack it was already bigger than what is allowed in their field service bulletin. I don't have a choice but to pull it off and get that blade resealed.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that Kevin. I was able to repair a nick in the leading edge erosion sheath on my MT, it was under the .24" max size listed in the MT manual. How large was the crack on your prop when you discovered it? And what caused it to grow so large since you did?

I've been looking to install a 3-blade next year..I believe MT is off the list!! Yikes!!

Mike,

Jim Richards hooked me up with the STC and we're having excellent luck with the 78" Hartzell Scimitar.

Caution. forward moment on the 'metal' prop caught me off guard. All worked out okay, but what I initially thought was going to shift the CG rearward ended up going the other way . . . Again, not a show stopper.

Well, my CG with me and another 200+ pound passenger and a full load of fuel already requires me to put a 50 pound bag of this water softener stuff in the baggage compartment. I suppose it'll just become a semi-permanent ballast!

Who are you? type/serial/location/etc

John, I am N5842N, s/n 14390, based at NH69.

My info is filled out in the profile but stopped showing up with the move to the new forum... I'll have to investigate.

This is what it looked like the day I discovered it, August 5:

Compare that to the picture above and you can see how much worse it got. Supposedly this is due to moisture getting in and swelling.

I took it to Sensenich in September and the guy told me it was not urgent, which turned out to be bad advice. Sounds like I would have been stuck paying for it no matter what.

I've gone from a fan to a very much not-fan overnight. Warranty issues aside, the fact that the prop can come apart so easily is extremely concerning.

I wasn't a fan of composite material to begin with...this kind of cinches the deal for me.

I'm amazed you were told that a prop with a huge crack in it was not urgent. Was it still within the "1 year or 1,000 hours" warranty period when you discovered the crack back in August?

The MT prop is more delicate on the trailing edge for sure. Is your contention that this was a spontaneous delamination? It does look like something ran into the prop.

Ken

There is a crack on a second blade - nowhere near as serious but in the identical location, which indicates to me that it is a spontaneous issue. I cannot say with 100% certainty that there was no impact, but I don't think there was, at least not from me. I found this about a month after I bought the plane and I can only remember having the cowling off once or twice to fix the broken mixture cable. I cannot remember anything bumping into the blade.
