Oil leak around engine through bolt Richard Lingg rlingg rajl@optonline.net Hi all,

It was nice meeting some of you at the COG Fly-in. I'm sorry I couldn't get there earlier and meet more folks.

I continue to look for a Commander. This weekend, I saw a nice 112 with 4200 TT and 1200 SMOH. It looked very well maintained. I got to meet the owner and the A&P, and was impressed with the airplane.

One big drawback is that the oil consumption is high - a quart every 4 hours. That's with an Airwolf oil separator. The A&P said the oil consumption was hight due to a leak in the engine around a through bolt. He said they've tried to fix it, but short of an engine tear down, it's probably not going away. It's a nuisance, but the owner thinks it's not enough of one to warrant an engine tear down.

The compressions are generally good - something like 74-76-74-70 last annual and 75-74-68-74 the annual before that.

Has anyone seen something similar before? Thoughts on whether this is too risky a proposition?

Thanks,
Richard
