Time for a new motor Sven Faret sfaret sven@faret.net

I had an episode last night that got my attention.--

I flew from Glenn Mores in Mass to NY last night.

I noticed that the oil pressure was top of the yellow shortly into the flight. (1:30 duration)

I had to cross LI Sound at an angle- 35 miles of water

By the time I got to ISP it was redline. (25lbs)

Southwest 2 flights in front of me went missed.

The airport then changed runways because MDA was 200 'lower.

They both made it, I had to be vectored around that airspace to the opposite runway. OP= 20-25 bouncing across the redline.

Broke out at 300 foot AGL. Whew!! 100 foot to go before missed.

Landed, parked, checked the oil. 3 quarts on the stick.

So I will not be so complacent next time.

So now we know-- at 3 quarts it gets iffy, 2= no motor.

What a way to find out. The wx should have been better. Black night, minimums, water and no oil spell doom and gloom.

(What logic. Yikes?!)

Apparently it's using more oil than expected more quickly, but no one else to blame than myself for not checking. Time for new engine. Along with repairing the hail damage, another winter project to dig into.
