Gear Warning light driving me nuts Rich Padula rpadula richpadula@access4less.net
Hey guys,
I should've listened to your warnings about Alan's carrier landings in 1194J,
so now I come for troubleshooting advice.
I've been having nagging gear warning light issues. All was pretty well for
several months, but it happened again this weekend exactly *two* flights
after she came out of annual last month, where it supposedly passed all gear
tests, so it's ticking me off.
This time, I seemed to have a normal post-takeoff retract cycle, then about 5
seconds later, the red light flickered a little (a clue?), went out briefly, then
came on solid. My previous experience with this is that the light would come
on during cruise.
Knowing I have the pullable CB, I let it stay on until pattern altitude (should
be at least 1 minute). Still on solid. Put the gear handle down, got three
green, landed and parked it. I couldn't find any evidence of hydraulic fluid at
the actuators in the wheel wells and nose.
After discussing w/Alan, we suspect it's in the nose gear somehow for the
following reasons:
1. At May 2005 annual, nose gear would not extend on jacks when
emergency handle was pulled. Had to pull on it by hand a little. Logbook
says "...Replaced nose gear upper and lower drag link bushings with new.
Replaced down lock switch and actuator, and up lock actuator with new...." So
they've been busy in there...
2. After having this problem occur in cruise last year, Alan noticed the nose
gear door had apparently rubbed away some of the cowl on the pilots (left)
side, indicating misalignment. Pointed this out to the shop in September
2005. They said gear operated fine on jacks, but adjusted gear door for
"additional clearance." Things seemed to be OK after that.
3. Cowl comes off at annual, so perhaps when it was put back together in not
quite the same way, the problem manifests itself in the air again
(speculation).
How would you guys troubleshoot this? I've seen so many answers here from
wiring to switches to o-rings, I don't know where to start. Keep in mind I'm
an *electrical* engineer, so please type slowly when discussing mechanical
things. :-)
Thanks,
Rich
