WWII Memorial Visit

Following on from WWII Dad's thread http://hoster2.commander.org/vb/showthread.php?t=2056,
I wondered if there might be any interest in organising a flying tour of WWII related sites in the UK and France.

My idea was that we could visit historical airfields and places that played a major role in that part of history.

Some possible areas to visit could be the South and East of England, The North coast of France down to Normandy and the Channel Islands.

If there is any interest then I would be happy to try to arrange something.

Re: WWII Memorial Visit

John I'd love to do just that but am on the wrong sid of the ocean to visit the airfirlds of East Anglia, Dover or N France (am a WWII history especially airplane design buff).
Hope there's lots of interest and the trip happens

Re: WWII Memorial Visit

Sid,
Yes it would not be an easy trip for the US guys I know.
I am just throwing the idea in the air to see what interest there might be.

At the rate the old WWII airfields are disappearing here in the UK then it will not be long before they have all gone.
Its a real shame that we loose these airfields, seems we never have enough houses and the airfields are always under pressure to be sold off.

North Weald were my plane is kept figured heavily in the Battle of Britain and has so much history to it. Luckily the local council(who own it) makes very good use of it but even so there are those who would like to see it go.

There are not many airfields left where you can be number two to land between a Hurricane and a Spitfire with two Jet provost in the circuit all at the same time. But this is a regular occurrence at North Weald... great place!!

The Dakota flew in yesterday and the other three flew in en-route for an airshow at Duxford a couple of weeks ago

Re: WWII Memorial Visit

Hello John
When did you move to North Weald? as you know I am right next door at Stapleford, we really must meet up.
I would be interested in visiting WW ll sites, by the way we have the BIG BEAUTIFULL DOLL Mustang at Stapleford now, the pilot had to divert to us with engine problems.

Re: WWII Memorial Visit

We moved our plane to North Weald in February because Andrewsfield grass strip was unusable due to being waterlogged.

We must meet up sometime soon, we will have arrange something.
I still se G-HILO when I go down to Lydd, she looks as nice as she always did.

I dont know if this thread will come to anything, but I think it could be very interesting if we could pull something together.

John:

We have been over to the UK twice in the last year and visited a dozen or so active and abandoned airfields. We have also visited the sites of a few of the old Normandy airfields while traveling in that area.

Every one has lots of fascinating stories.

A "guided" tour in your area of the country would be great!
