Wing Root Fairings

Re: Wing Root Fairings

I received Carl's wing root fairing kit today!
A very complete all encompassing kit
Includes horizontal stabilizer fairings!!!
Nine page step by step install manual included.
I will post pictures if Carl doesn't beat us to it!

Great finish on the gel coat!
Thanks again Carl!

Mine are at the paint shop - should be able to post pictures this weekend.

Re: Wing Root Fairings

Came out a little whiter than I would like - the bummer of fading paint. Still better than the Piper rubber seals.

Re: Wing Root Fairings

Very nice Carl. And don't forget about the 5 kts you'll pick up with those installed.

Re: Wing Root Fairings

Carl,

Those look great! I have the Piper ones you mentioned. When I get her repainted - I will be wanting a set - but - avionics are first on the list and I need to stick with the plan.

Re: Wing Root Fairings

Carl,
Is that a standard cowl?
Where did the landing light on the nose gear come from?

Hi Fred,

Yes, it's the factory cowl modified for the Hot Shot conversion. The nose gear landing light is also part of the original Hot Shot conversion.

Purty!!

Check around on the floor and see if you see a box with N1182J written on it. Do not think 82J ever had a nose gear light.

Life is a barrel of fun.

I'm not sure if Sven and Robin ever put one on 82J because, I think, it already had the leading edge lights.

I've stopped using them on the new conversions and now just use the main gear light kit instead.

Robin's design was a little Mickey Mouse, but I recently modified mine a bit and stuck it back on there. The circuit was still there, so what the heck!

Sven once told me that he had put the light on when up getting the kit installed in Big Piney but then took it off as he didn't care for the way it attached - it didn't live up to the SF Standard.

He also concluded that there was plenty of other light options available.

Re: Wing Root Fairings

especially when you consider all the lights that N1182J HS has, anyway.:)

Yeah, he didn't have any kind words for that nose gear light assembly. :)

I took a bit of manipulation to get it to the level that would make me happy too. It's still not great, a bit of a pia, impossible to clean behind it, and it blocks your view of the steering stops. If my gear doors weren't already destroyed to provide clearance, and I didn't have however many countless hours into modifying it, I wouldn't mess with it either.

The story goes this way...

Sven was [of course] in Big Piney in person to work with Robin on the installation. When it came time for the nose gear doors to be -- ahem -- modified for the light a brief conversation ensued. It was mostly expletives in Long Island and Wyoming accents. In the end they both agreed that it would be best not to install the nose gear light. As you know, neither of them were ever opinionated individuals. ;)

Sven would be extremely pleased to hear the gear door modification process has been improved.

On a related note, I really miss the random calls Sven would make out of the blue to talk politics or avionics. He was taken from us way too soon.

Regards,
Neal
