That's pretty good, I'm glad they didn't away the secret to the magic ;-)

Haahaa! Great extract Pat thank you. I have always respected flight attendants.

Best regards,

Re: Why we must turn of electronics

Pat wicked Funny and totally true and have seen in imc my Commander-114, The Saratoga, Lance and King Air when a person on the plane has a call coming in and ringing will interfere with Localizer and Wig Wags one tick and rocks back and forth, but doesn't interfere with the glide slope on these planes.

There is a reason the the FAA requires them off for the airlines ops.

Re: Why we must turn of electronics

I thought they changed the rules so that it's now up to the discretion of the airline as to whether or not specific devices need to be turned on/off. I know on one recent flight, they asked us to put everything in "airplane" mode, but allowed us to keep them on during the entire flight.

Yep that's right. I have had similar experience on all my recent flights.

Re: Why we must turn of electronics

Thats true Jim. The airline I work for allowed this and just recently approved electronic devices during Cat 2/3 operations. This doesnt give me the warm fuzzy at all as we do ALOT of low Cat 3 ops here in the NW. I cant tell you how may times sitting in the back I see people turning their phones on trying to get texts or emails as we get closer to the ground.

Its sad our society cant be away from instant contact for more than a couple hours.

Can we get the flight attendant for a COG Annual Fly-In speaker?

She's in the Union and won't work on a weekend.

Re: Why we must turn of electronics

I especially loved, "Hey ... if that's true, why doesn't this big plane interfere with my little phone?" Pretty good logic there.

I do like being able to keep kindles and ipads on. But in every survey, the vote is 10 to 1 that passengers do NOT want people talking. That would make me totally nuts. Already subject to too many aholes going on and on in the boarding area about their big business deals.

I heard an interesting story...can't remember from where that the no cell phone rule was more an FCC issue than an FAA one. Too many people talking on cell phones in a speeding jet "confuse" the cell towers! I'm with Scott on this one...even if cell phones did not create a safety issue, would you really want 200 people "yapping" on their phones.

If you read the asrs database there are examples of consumer electronics (one was even a discman) interfering with some aircraft systems- including causing fuel level sending units to report false levels (!).

As far as the cell issue, it's a combination- they can't get reception at altitude anyway, but if they could, yes the rate at which they'd be switching towers would overload the cell system doing the handoffs. As providers switch to VoIP tech instead of traditional switched circuits, this becomes less of an issue. The easy workaround is an on board tower, much like how you get inflight internet. That said, the overwhelming opposition to that by both crew and passenger is related to the noise.
There is talk of allowing data-only connections.

Let's see if they can get the reclining conflicts resolved, before moving on to the yacking-on-the-cell-phone conflict.

Maybe we should get a jump on the cell blockers. :D

Re: Why we must turn of electronics

I say go down the aisle with a bucket of water and everyone who makes a cell call after push-back gets the phone dumped in the bucket. Pick it up after landing.

CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE ?!?!?!?!?!

As much as I fly the Commander (as I would always prefer) I am also Delta Platinum (75K actual miles annually or more) and fly a ton commercially. People on their cell next to me would make me violent, and I am more even-tempered than at LEAST half the people on this web board! There would be blood in the aisles. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh. NO FRICKIN' WAY. Text if fine, and I would use it. But no talkee, mon.

Harbour Air, that fly float equipped de Havilland Beavers, Turbo Otters and Twin Otters, on numerous routes from Vancouver and Victoria BC, have a cute, preflight safety video, that deals with cell phone users.

Thanks for posting that. Gorgeous birds. Next trip out that way I am going to buy the cheapest flight I can on them just to fly in those beautiful planes.
